Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a WarningThe shadow of the intruder spun around, raising his firearm toward the living room archway.

It was too late.

Ranger didn't charge like an ordinary guard dog. He moved with terrifying, terrifying silence for a 150-pound mastiff. In a single, fluid leap, the black giant cleared the coffee table and slammed directly into the intruder’s chest.

CRASH!

The man went flying backward, crashing hard against the kitchen counter, shattering ceramic mugs and sending silverware clattering across the floor. The silenced pistol flew from his hand, sliding under the sofa.

"Aghhh!" the intruder shrieked, thrashing wildly as Ranger pinned him to the floor with one massive, heavy paw planted squarely on the man's chest.

Ranger leaned down, his massive jaws snapping inches from the masked man's throat. Saliva dripped onto the intruder's terrified face as the beast let out a low, bone-chilling rumble that promised absolute annihilation.

Claire clung to the staircase banister, trembling uncontrollably, watching the terrifying display of raw, predatory power.

Suddenly, heavy boots thundered across the front porch outside. The heavy oak door burst open, and Vincent Calloway rushed into the pavilion, holding a tactical submachine gun, flanked by two armed guards.

"Clear!" Vincent barked, sweeping the room with his weapon before his eyes locked onto the scene in the kitchen.

Ranger had the intruder pinned. The man’s mask had been ripped off, revealing a young, sweating face twisted in absolute terror.

Vincent lowered his weapon slowly, walking over to the edge of the kitchen. He looked down at the intruder, his face completely devoid of mercy.

"Who sent you?" Vincent asked, his voice chillingly calm. "Dante? Or one of the harbor board members?"

"I-I swear, I didn't mean—!" the man sobbed, trying to squirm away, but Ranger pressed down harder, letting out a sharp, warning snap that made the man’s teeth chatter.

"I'll ask you one more time," Vincent said, stepping closer and crouching down so his face was inches from the terrified operative. "Who sent you?"

"D-Dante!" the man gasped, tears streaming down his face. "He wanted to plant a listening device! He wanted to know what you were planning for the Friday auction!"

Vincent stood up slowly. He didn't look angry anymore. He looked like a man who had just decided someone's fate.

"Take him outside," Vincent ordered his guards. "Tie him to the front gates of Dante's main compound in downtown Chicago. Leave his mask on his chest. Let Dante know that the next message won't be delivered by a messenger."

The guards hoisted the whimpering man off the floor, dragging him out into the freezing night air.

Vincent turned around, his dark eyes finding Claire standing frozen on the stairs. He walked over to the base of the staircase, looking up at her with a softened, almost apologetic expression.

"Are you and Maddie alright?" he asked quietly.

Claire swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper. "We're... we're safe."

May you like

Vincent nodded slowly, then reached down and patted Ranger's thick head. The mastiff immediately released his posturing, trotting over to the bottom of the stairs, looking up at the second-floor hallway where Maddie was still sleeping peacefully.

"He won't let anything happen to her, Claire," Vincent said softly. "And neither will I."
