Chapter 4 - THE THIRTY-YEAR RECKONING

The Vance Global Tower soared eighty stories above the city, a towering monolith of black glass and steel that symbolized absolute, corrupt power.

At 11:35 PM, the sky above the penthouse was torn apart by the roar of the helicopter’s blades.

Inside the grand glass-walled ballroom on the 80th floor, Eleanor Vance stood with a glass of champagne in her hand, surrounded by international billionaires, politicians, and news executives. She wore a emerald-studded gown, her silver hair styled impeccably, her posture regal and arrogant.

"A toast," Eleanor announced, raising her glass as her guests clapped politely. "To progress, to wealth, and to the future of Vance Global—a future unburdened by the past."

Suddenly, the massive glass skylight directly above the ballroom shattered into a million glittering rain fragments.

Ropes dropped through the opening, and tactical commandos in unmarked black gear descended like vengeful specters. Before the security guards could raise their weapons, pulse-grenades detonated, releasing blinding white flashes and high-frequency sound waves that sent the wealthy elite screaming to the floor.

Through the mist and falling rain, three figures stepped down from the drop line, landing heavily on the polished marble floor: Julian, Marcus, and Ethan.

And behind them, stepping calmly down the main grand staircase that connected the helipad, came Rose.

She wore a simple, dark wool coat over her clothes, her silver-streaked hair tied back neatly. In her hand, she didn't carry a gun, nor a document. She carried the dented spoon.

Eleanor Vance backed away, dropping her champagne flute. The glass shattered, echoing in the dead silence of the room. Her eyes darted from Julian to Marcus, and finally, landed on Rose.

"You..." Eleanor breathed, her voice laced with venom and sudden, creeping terror. "You're dead. You were supposed to die in that alley thirty years ago."

"I survived, Eleanor," Rose said, her voice carrying through the silent, smoke-filled room with absolute authority. "I survived on dry bread, cold water, and the hope that one day God would bring my boys back to me. He did. And now, He has sent us to collect what you owe."

Eleanor quickly tried to regain her composure, laughing cold and bitterly. "You old fool! Look at the clock! It is 11:48 PM! In twelve minutes, the emergency decree takes effect. I own everything! Your land, your husband's legacy, this entire company! You have nothing! You are just a filthy peasant who managed to live too long!"

"Check your phone, Eleanor," Julian said softly.

Eleanor’s brow furrowed. She pulled her encrypted phone from her purse.

The screen was flashing red.

ALERT: ALL ASSETS FROZEN. BOARD OF DIRECTORS OUSTED. SYSTEM HIJACK IN PROGRESS.

"What is this?!" Eleanor screamed, her eyes widening in madness. "What did you do?!"

Marcus stepped forward, tapping his tablet. "While you were waiting for midnight, Ethan routed our override code directly into the city's central communications grid. Look out the window, Eleanor."

Eleanor turned slowly toward the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the metropolis.

Every single digital billboard in the city—from Time Square to the highway displays—had suddenly switched.

The image displayed on thousands of screens was the face of Eleanor Vance, accompanied by scrolling bank statements, wire transfers, audio recordings of her ordering the murder of Rose’s husband, and the original adoption fraud documents proving she kidnapped Julian.

Not only that—Ethan had broadcasted the live feed of the penthouse directly to every television network and social media platform across the globe.

"There are currently forty million people watching you right now, Eleanor," Ethan said calmly. "The governor who signed your decree just issued a public resignation five minutes ago on live television to save his own skin."

Eleanor shook her head violently, stumbling backward against the head board table. "No... no! You can't do this to me! I built this empire! I am Vance Global!"

"You built nothing," Rose said, stepping right up to Eleanor until they were standing face-to-face. "You stole a baby from a grieving mother. You stole food from starving children. You built a house of cards on top of a mountain of suffering. And now, the wind has come."

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the penthouse burst open.

Federal agents, accompanied by state prosecutors, swarmed the room, their weapons drawn.

"Eleanor Vance!" the lead agent shouted. "You are under arrest for kidnapping, corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and high treason. Hands behind your head!"

Eleanor looked around wildly, realizing that every senator, every executive, and every guard who had sworn loyalty to her had already backed away, leaving her utterly alone.

As the agents slammed Eleanor onto the marble floor and snapped steel handcuffs around her wrists, she glared up at Rose with pure hatred.

"You think you've won?" Eleanor spat, blood trickling from her lip. "You think this brings your life back? You spent thirty years in the dirt, Rose! Thirty years of crying for a son who didn't know your name! I took his childhood from you! You can never get that back!"

Rose looked down at the woman who had ruined her life. She didn't look angry. She didn't look vengeful. She only looked peaceful.

Rose leaned down and gently placed the old, dented spoon into Eleanor’s trembling, handcuffed hands.

"You took thirty years, Eleanor," Rose whispered softly. "But you gave me three sons who grew up to be giants. And today, they brought me home."
