Chapter 8 - THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE AND THE UNEXPECTED TRUTH

Gabriel stood in the center of the ruined living room, holding a heavy black assault rifle. He wore full tactical armor, his face partially hidden by the shadow of a combat helmet. But his eyes... his eyes were the exact same shade of hazel as the young blacksmith Rose had loved and lost thirty years ago.

Behind Gabriel, six heavily armed Black Vanguard mercenaries stood with their weapons trained on Rose’s chest.

Rose walked toward him slowly. She didn't look at the guns. She didn't look at the armor. She only looked at his eyes.

"Look at me, Gabriel," Rose said softly.

Gabriel’s finger tightened on the trigger of his rifle. "Don't come any closer."

"You have your father's eyes," Rose whispered, taking another step. "And you have the same small scar on your right wrist from the day you were born... the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around you."

Gabriel’s posture stiffened. His eyes flickered with a sudden, violent crack in his icy composure. "Eleanor’s files... they had medical records."

"Eleanor’s files didn't tell you about the song I sang to you every night," Rose said, stepping right up to the muzzle of his rifle. She gently reached out her hand and rested her bare palm directly against the cold steel of the gun barrel, pushing it slowly down toward the floor.

"What song?" Gabriel demanded, his voice cracking slightly.

Rose began to hum a quiet, ancient lullaby—a melody she had never written down, a melody passed down through three generations of her family, a song she had only sung to her baby in the quiet hours of the freezing winter nights of 1994.

Gabriel froze.

The rifle slipped slightly in his grip. Deep within his subconscious, locked away beneath decades of military training and hardened isolation, the faint, warm memory of that exact melody echoed through his mind.

"I didn't sell you, my baby," Rose wept, reaching up with her other hand to gently touch his face. "I loved you. I searched for you in every passing face for thirty years. If you want to kill me because of the pain you felt, then shoot me. My life was complete the moment I saw you walk through that door."

Gabriel stared at her, his chest heaving. Tears welled in his hazel eyes, betraying the hardened soldier beneath.

"Mother..." he whispered, the word escaping his lips before he could stop it.

SUDDENLY—

A red laser sight dotted directly onto the center of Rose’s chest.

It wasn't coming from Gabriel.

It was coming from the lead commander of the Black Vanguard mercenaries standing directly behind Gabriel!

"Contract override," the commander sneered into his radio. "Target confirmed. Eleanor Vance’s secondary contingency protocol activated. Eliminate everyone in the room!"

Eleanor had set a secondary trap! If Gabriel hesitated, the mercenaries were under strict orders to execute everyone—including Gabriel—and claim a twenty-million-dollar offshore bounty!

"NO!" Gabriel roared.

In a fraction of a second, Gabriel spun around, placing his armored body directly between the commander's gun and Rose.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Gunfire erupted. Gabriel took two heavy rounds to his chest plate, stumbling backward, but managed to raise his own weapon and eliminate the commander instantly.

At the exact same moment, Julian, Marcus, and Ethan burst out from the basement, engaging the remaining five mercenaries in a deadly, violent firefight. Within ten seconds, the room fell silent again, the air thick with gunsmoke and spent shell casings.

The mercenaries were dead.

Rose fell to her knees, catching Gabriel as he collapsed onto the carpet.

"Gabriel! No! No, please God, no!" Rose screamed, pulling off his helmet.

Gabriel gasped for air, coughing violently. The armor had stopped the bullets from penetrating his heart, but the impact had fractured his ribs and knocked the air from his lungs.

He looked up at Rose, reaching up with a hand covered in tactical leather to hold her face.

"You... you really kept the blanket," Gabriel choked out, looking at the threadbare blue blanket sticking out of Rose’s coat pocket.

"Always," Rose sobbed, kissing his forehead. "Always, my sweet boy."

Julian, Marcus, and Ethan rushed over, helping Gabriel sit up. Julian immediately applied pressure to his injuries, his eyes full of concern.

Gabriel looked up at the three men he had come to kill. He saw no hatred in their eyes—only brotherhood, grief, and love.

"I'm sorry," Gabriel whispered to Julian. "I was... I was blind."

Julian grabbed Gabriel's hand tightly. "You were lost, brother. Now you're home."

EPILOGUE: THE BREAD OF LIFEONE YEAR LATER

The sun rose warmly over the coast, illuminating a magnificent, sprawling estate that had been transformed into the Rose Foundation Center for Children.

In the central courtyard, hundreds of children were playing, laughing, and enjoying warm meals served at long wooden tables.

At the head table sat Rose. She wore a clean, simple floral dress. Beside her sat her four sons—Julian, Marcus, Ethan, and Gabriel—working together, laughing, and passing plates of food down to the children.

Gabriel, now fully recovered and serving as the head of security for the foundation, picked up a large serving bowl and smiled at a tiny, shivering orphan girl who had just arrived at the gates that morning.

He poured a generous portion of warm soup into her bowl.

"Eat while it's warm, little one," Gabriel said gently, echoing the words his mother had spoken thirty-one years ago.

The little girl looked up at him with big, hopeful eyes. "Aren't you hungry too?"

Rose looked over at her four sons, her heart overflowing with a peace she had waited a lifetime to feel.

May you like

Gabriel smiled, looking back at Rose, and then down at the child.

"Mothers—and brothers—are never hungry when children are eating."
