Chapter 2 - The House of Mirrors

The black sedan didn't head toward Apex Global's gleaming downtown skyscraper. Instead, it carved through the labyrinth of industrial warehouses near the shipping docks, finally sliding through a pair of heavy, iron security gates that groaned open to reveal an unmarked brutalist concrete facility.
Inside, the air smelled of ozone and industrial floor wax.
Alex was escorted down a sterile, windowless corridor by two men whose silence felt heavier than any threat. They stopped in front of a brushed-steel door marked simply: Director of Special Integration.
The door hissed open.
Marcus Vance sat behind a massive glass desk that reflected the cold white glare of recessed LED ceiling panels. He was in his late forties, with sharp, silver-streaked hair, wire-rimmed glasses, and eyes that looked like they hadn't blinked in a decade.
"Alex. Please, sit," Vance said, gesturing to a minimalist leather chair opposite him. He didn't look up from his tablet. "I trust the drive wasn't too jarring. We like to keep our acquisitions... confidential."
Alex remained standing, his hands clenched inside his coat pockets, his fingers brushing the cold metal of his phone. "You didn't bring me here to talk about synergy, Marcus. Let's skip the corporate bullshit. What is this place?"
Vance finally set his tablet down, folding his hands neatly on the glass surface. A slow, thin smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"This, Alex, is where the future is written," Vance said softly. "Or, more accurately, where loose ends are tied up."
"The backdoor in my code," Alex shot back, his voice cutting through the hum of the room's ventilation system. "I found it, Marcus. You injected a rogue protocol into my architecture before the ink on the contract was even dry. You're using my software to build an offensive cyber-weapon."
Vance didn't flinch. He didn't look surprised. He leaned back in his chair, uncrossing his hands, as if he had been waiting for this exact confrontation.
"Offensive? Such a primitive word," Vance sighed, shaking his head. "We prefer 'strategic deterrence.' Do you have any idea what is happening across the globe right now, Alex? Cyber warfare isn't about stealing credit card numbers anymore. It's about infrastructure. Power grids. Satellite constellations. Financial markets. Whoever controls the master key controls the board."
"And you made me your key," Alex said, a cold realization washing over him. "The biometric lock on the server... it’s not to protect the software. It’s a dead man's switch. If I don't authenticate the final deployment protocol, your system self-destructs—and you need my active signature to cover your tracks so it looks like a natural system failure."
"Brilliant," Vance whispered, clapping his hands twice—a dry, echoing sound. "I knew we hired a genius. You see everything except the obvious."
"And what's that?"
"You can't walk away, Alex," Vance said, his voice dropping an octave, turning razor-sharp. "The fourteen million dollars currently sitting in your personal bank account? It’s untraceable offshore capital routed through three shell companies in the Caymans. Legally, the moment you accepted those funds, you became an unindicted co-conspirator in a multi-billion-dollar corporate espionage and illegal arms-trafficking operation."
Alex felt the floor drop out from under him. The money wasn't a reward. It was golden handcuffs.
"If you walk out those doors," Vance continued, standing up and walking slowly around the glass desk until he was standing just inches from Alex, "within twenty minutes, the FBI will receive an anonymous whistleblower dossier proving that you engineered the military-grade backdoor and sold it to a hostile foreign intelligence syndicate. You'll spend the rest of your natural life in a supermax federal prison."
May you like
Vance leaned in close, his breath smelling of mint and ash.
"Or," Vance whispered, "you sit at that terminal down the hall, complete the final sequence, and become a very wealthy, very comfortable senior consultant for Apex Global Defense. What's it going to be, creator?"
