Chapter 6 - The Price of Freedom

The federal courthouse steps were blindingly bright under the afternoon sun, reflecting off a sea of camera lenses, microphones, and flashing reporter lights.

A wall of microphones blocked the path down the stone stairs. Journalists shouted over one another, their voices blending into a chaotic wall of sound.

“Mr. Carter! Is it true you engineered the leak?” “Did you know about Apex’s military contracts when you sold the company?” “Are you facing federal charges or operating as a key witness?”

Alex walked down the wide granite steps flanked by two federal marshals, wearing his dark wool coat, his hands tucked firmly into his pockets. He didn't smile for the cameras. He didn't gloat.

He had spent the last twelve hours in a secure debriefing room with Department of Justice prosecutors and federal cyber-crime investigators. Because he had proactively handed over the entire encrypted decryption key along with the automated data leak package, the DOJ had granted him full immunity as a whistleblower and primary witness in the prosecution of Apex Global Defense.

Julian Thorne and Marcus Vance were currently sitting in holding cells awaiting arraignment on charges of high treason, corporate espionage, and illegal arms trafficking. Their multi-billion-dollar defense empire was actively being dismantled by federal receivership.

The fourteen million dollars wired to Alex’s account?

After a thorough forensic audit by the federal government, it was officially re-categorized as legitimate purchase capital for his startup's intellectual property—completely cleared of any criminal taint.

He was legally, financially, and professionally free.

As Alex reached the bottom of the steps, a familiar battered Honda Civic pulled up to the curb. The passenger side window rolled down, and Maya’s grinning face poked out, wearing her signature oversized vintage sunglasses.

"Need a ride, billionaire genius?" Maya called out over the din of the reporters.

Leo was sitting in the back seat, holding up a laptop screen that displayed a live counter tracking the plummeting stock prices of Apex Global Defense. "Bro, we just shorted their stock right before the data dump. We made an extra two million on the descent!"

Alex couldn't help it. A genuine, exhausted smile finally broke across his face.

He slipped past the wall of reporters, pulled open the car door, and slid into the front seat. Maya slammed the gas pedal down, peeling away from the courthouse curb and leaving the flashing camera lights and the corporate sharks far behind in the rearview mirror.

"So," Maya asked, merging onto the highway toward the city limits, her eyes darting sideways at him. "Now that you've destroyed a multi-billion-dollar military-industrial complex... what's for lunch?"

Alex looked out the window at the sprawling skyline of the city under the cold, clear winter sky. The fourteen million dollars was sitting in his bank account. His name was plastered across every front page in the world. He was young, brilliant, and completely untethered.

"I don't know," Alex said, leaning his head back against the headrest, letting out a long, deep breath he felt like he'd been holding for years. "Let's find somewhere that serves real coffee. No codes. No servers. Just coffee."

Maya laughed, cranking up the radio as the car accelerated down the open highway, heading toward a future they had written themselves.
