Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marble Halls

Nightfall in the Romano estate did not bring peace; it brought a suffocating, heavy tension that clung to the velvet drapes and echoed through the hollow corridors.

After hours of quiet patience, gentle humming, and reading every battered storybook in the nursery, Ruby finally managed to get Leo to sleep. He was curled tightly against her side in the oversized toddler bed, his small hand still knotted firmly into the fabric of her sleeve as if terrified she would vanish when he closed his eyes.

Ruby slipped out of bed with agonizing slowness, tiptoeing across the Persian rug toward the door. Her arm throbbed a dull, rhythmic ache where Leo’s teeth had broken the skin, and the bruise on her collarbone felt stiff and heavy.

As she stepped out into the dimly lit second-floor hallway, a shadow detached itself from the archway near the grand staircase.

Vincent stood there, a crystal tumbler of scotch half-held in his large hand, his shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal thick, corded forearms etched with old scars. The amber light from the chandelier caught the hard planes of his jaw.

"Is he asleep?" Vincent asked, his voice low enough not to carry down the stairwell.

"Yes. But he’s holding onto my sleeve. I had to unhook him very carefully," Ruby whispered, leaning back against the corridor wall to take the weight off her aching feet.

Vincent stepped closer, his dark gaze dropping instantly to the makeshift bandage Mrs. Higgins had taped over her arm. A muscle ticked in his jaw.

"Dr. Vance said the bite missed the tendon by a millimeter. Most people would have struck him," Vincent said, watching her closely to gauge her reaction. "Why didn't you?"

"Because hitting a terrified, angry two-year-old doesn't teach him how to feel safe, Mr. Romano. It just teaches him that everyone he loves is violent," Ruby answered without hesitation, her exhaustion bleeding into a raw, unfiltered honesty.

Vincent went entirely still. The air between them suddenly felt charged, heavy with an unspoken understanding that crossed the vast chasm of their different worlds. He took another step closer, invading her personal space, his imposing frame casting a long shadow over her.

"You talk like a woman who has fought every single day of her life just to occupy a single inch of space," Vincent murmured, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register that sent a shiver straight down Ruby’s spine.

"Life hasn't exactly handed me a silver spoon, Mr. Romano," she shot back, lifting her chin to meet his intense gaze directly. "Some of us have to build our own floors just so we don't fall through."

Before Vincent could reply, a sudden, sharp shatter echoed from the east wing—the sound of breaking glass and a man's muffled cry of pain.

Vincent’s entire demeanor shifted in a fraction of a second. The brooding father vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless Chicago kingpin. His eyes flashed with cold menace.

"Stay in the nursery," Vincent commanded, his voice turning to steel as he pivoted away from her toward the stairs. "Do not open this door for anyone."

Ruby watched him disappear into the shadows, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had stepped into a world of untold wealth, but beneath the polished marble and crystal chandeliers, a bloody, ruthless war was waiting for them all.
