Chapter 4 - The Lakehouse Siege

The Romano lakehouse was a sprawling fortress of glass and dark timber nestled deep within the snow-draped pine forests of Wisconsin, surrounded by high chain-link fences and private security guards patrolling the perimeter.

For the first two days, the isolation worked its magic. Leo, away from the chaotic noise of the Chicago estate, calmed down significantly. He spent hours sitting on the plush rug of the living room, building elaborate wooden block towers with Ruby while Vincent worked in his glass-walled home office just down the hall.

Ruby was sitting cross-legged on the floor, helping Leo place the final spire on a towering block castle, when the heavy oak front door suddenly rattled under a barrage of heavy thuds.

Leo shrieked, instantly kicking the castle down, sending wooden blocks flying across the room as he scrambled into Ruby’s lap, sobbing hysterically and burying his face in her neck.

"Shh, shh, I've got you," Ruby whispered, holding him tight as the sound of splintering wood echoed from the foyer.

From the hallway, the sharp crack of a silenced pistol rang out, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor.

The door to the living room flew open. Vincent stood in the doorway, his suit jacket discarded, a sleek Beretta pistol gripped firmly in his right hand. A dark smear of blood stained the white collar of his shirt—not his own.

"Get under the reinforced table in the pantry. Now," Vincent ordered, his voice terrifyingly calm, though his eyes burned with lethal fury.

"Vincent, there are men—"

"I know," Vincent interrupted, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute intensity. "They tracked us. Stay with Leo. Do not make a sound."

Before Ruby could move, a masked intruder lunged from the shadows of the hallway, knife flashing in the dim light, aiming straight for Vincent’s back.

"Vincent!" Ruby screamed.

Without hesitation, Ruby grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp beside the sofa and hurled it with every ounce of strength she possessed. The heavy metal base caught the intruder squarely in the chest, sending him crashing backward into the wall just as Vincent spun around and fired twice.

The intruder slumped to the floor, motionless.

Vincent didn't waste a second. He crossed the room in two strides, hauled the heavy oak pantry door open, and practically shoved Ruby and Leo inside, slamming the heavy deadbolt shut from the outside.

In the pitch-black space, holding a shaking, terrified toddler against her chest while the sounds of gunfire echoed outside, Ruby realized a terrifying truth: she wasn't just working for the mafia boss anymore. She was standing in the line of fire right beside him.
