Chapter 5 - Confessions in the Dark

The gunfire outside stopped as abruptly as it had begun, leaving behind an eerie, suffocating silence that stretched on for agonizing minutes.

Inside the cramped pantry, the only sound was Leo’s soft, exhausted whimpers and the frantic, rhythmic thud of Ruby’s heart. She sat on sacks of flour, holding the little boy tight, rocking him back and forth until his breathing finally evened out and he fell asleep against her shoulder.

A sharp metallic click echoed from the door.

The heavy deadbolt slid back, and the door swung open.

The harsh hallway light cut through the darkness, illuminating Vincent. He looked exhausted, his shirt sleeves stained with blood, his hair disheveled. He scanned the small space instantly, his eyes locking onto Ruby and the sleeping child.

"It's clear," Vincent said, his voice raw. "The perimeter sweep is complete. They're all gone."

Ruby let out a long, shaky breath she felt like she’d been holding for an eternity. She gently shifted Leo into a comfortable position, preparing to stand up, but her legs buckled beneath her. The sheer adrenaline crash hit her all at once, wave after wave of nausea and weakness.

Vincent moved instantly, catching her by the waist before she hit the floor, lifting her effortlessly into his arms as if she weighed nothing at all.

"V-Vincent, put me down, I can walk," she protested weakly, her face flushing crimson as he carried her out of the pantry and down the hall toward the master bedroom.

"Shut up, Ruby," he said softly, a rare note of genuine gentleness in his tone. "You just saved my life with a brass floor lamp. The least I can do is carry you to a bed."

He laid her gently down on the massive king-sized bed, sitting beside her and gently examining her scraped hands and the bruised collarbone. His calloused fingers brushed against her skin with a reverence that contrasted sharply with the dangerous world he inhabited.

"You shouldn't have thrown that lamp," Vincent murmured, his dark eyes searching her face. "You could have been killed."

"And you shouldn't have stood there letting someone sneak up on you," Ruby shot back, though her voice lacked its usual bite. She looked up into his eyes, seeing past the armor of the billionaire shipping heir and the ruthless mafia boss, right down to the lonely, exhausted father underneath. "Why did you really bring us here, Vincent?"

Vincent went quiet. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, staring down at the polished wooden floorboards.

"Because for two years, everyone who entered my home treated my son like a monster or a paycheck," Vincent said slowly, his voice thick with emotion. "When you looked past his teeth and saw his fear... you didn't run. And for the first time in my life, Ruby, I realized I couldn't bear the thought of someone hurting you."

Before Ruby could process the confession, Vincent leaned down, capturing her lips in a fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of smoke, blood, and a desperate, burning longing.
