Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Envelope“What did she say?”

The words tore out of my throat before I could stop them. The sterile smell of the hospital lobby suddenly felt suffocating. Around us, the polite hum of monitors and distant paging systems faded into a low, static drone.
Richard’s gaze flicked back to me, heavy with decades of secrets.
“She called from a payphone in a diner three states away,” he said, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. “She told my father that Caroline was gone.”
My chest tightened. “Gone? Where?”
“Dead,” Richard said flatly.
The word dropped between us like a lead weight. Sophie clutched the hem of my cardigan, sensing the sudden shift in the air.
“Dead?” I echoed, the disbelief stinging my eyes. “My mother told you Caroline was dead?”

Or, at least, he wanted to. It wrapped up a scandal that could have ruined him.”
“And you?” I demanded, stepping closer. “Did you believe her?”
Richard raised his gaze, and for the first time, I saw the raw, aching exhaustion hidden beneath the billionaire's tailored veneer.
“No,” he whispered. “Because Margaret left something behind in the estate quarters the night she vanished. A locked wooden box. And inside it, years later, when I finally forced the lock open... I found a set of hospital birth records.”
A cold sweat broke out across my spine. “What records?”
May you like
“Records for a baby girl born in a private clinic in Vermont, six months after Caroline disappeared,” Richard said, his eyes locking onto Sophie. “A baby girl with a rare genetic heterochromia. A baby girl named Sophie Cole.”
The shocking truth is out: Sophie isn't just a random stranger—she is the heir to an empire they tried to bury. But why did Margaret hide her?
