Chapter 7 - Secrets of the BloodlineThe Maybach’s tires screeched as Richard navigated the labyrinth of subterranean maintenance roads, the headlights cutting through billowing clouds of steam and dust. In the backseat, I was frantically checking Sophie over, wiping the cold water and soot from her face.

“Are you hurt, baby? Did anything touch you?”
“I’m okay, Mom,” Sophie whispered bravely, though her amber and blue-gray eyes were wide with shock. She reached up and touched Richard’s sleeve as he drove with white-knuckled intensity. “Are the bad men gone?”
Richard glanced at her in the rearview mirror, his fierce expression softening into something deeply tender.
“They’re far behind us, Sophie,” he said gently. “And I promise you, no one is ever going to hurt you or your mother again.”
I glared at him from across the leather interior, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. “Stop making promises you can't keep, Richard. We are in this mess because of your family's toxic legacy. Who the hell was Caroline, really? And why did my mother lie and say she was dead?”
Richard kept his eyes fixed on the winding tunnel ahead, his jaw tight.
“Margaret didn't lie to be malicious,” Richard said quietly. “She lied to save Caroline’s life.”
“Explain. Now.”
“My father was a monster,” Richard said, the words dragging out of him like pulling teeth. “When Caroline got pregnant at twenty-two by a man my father deemed ‘unsuitable,’ he threatened to have her committed permanently to an asylum under a false identity. He wanted the baby taken away at birth and adopted out to a family that would never know its origins.”
My breath caught. “And my mother helped her escape?”
“Your mother was Caroline’s best friend and confidante,” Richard nodded. “Margaret smuggled her out of the estate wearing her own clothes. They traded identities on the road. When my father’s private investigators tracked them down to that Vermont motel two months later... they found Caroline bleeding out from severe postpartum hemorrhage after giving birth prematurely.”
The air in the car turned instantly freezing.
“She died?” I whispered, the horror creeping into my bones.
“She died in Margaret’s arms,” Richard said, his voice breaking slightly. “Margaret buried her in an unmarked grave in the woods, took the newborn baby girl—you, Hannah—and ran as far as her legs could carry her.”
I stared at him, stunned into absolute silence.
“Wait,” I stammered, the timeline suddenly clicking together in my head with terrifying clarity. “If Margaret took me... then who is Caroline’s second child?”
Richard slowly pulled the Maybach to a halt in a secluded, abandoned maintenance alcove, turning off the headlights. He turned around in his seat, looking straight at Sophie, and then at me.

“Caroline didn't have just one child, Hannah,” Richard said softly. “She had twins.”
Twins. If I am one, and Sophie is the other... wait, no. The math doesn't add up. Who is the second child? The shocking revelation changes everything.
