Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Sub-LevelThe private elevator descended far past the standard parking levels, down into the limestone bedrock beneath the hospital foundations. The air grew damp, smelling of old concrete, hydraulic fluid, and forgotten history.

When the doors opened, we stepped into a vast, dimly lit subterranean loading bay. Rows of heavy industrial pipes ran along the ceiling like the skeletal ribs of some massive beast.

“Over here,” Richard said, leading us toward a sleek, matte-black Mercedes Maybach parked directly beneath a security camera.

Suddenly, a blinding wall of white light flooded the bay.

Three black SUVs came screaming around the concrete pillar, their high beams flashing blindingly against our eyes. Heavy armored doors slammed open, and four men in tactical black gear, wearing earpieces and carrying tactical restraints, spilled out into the open space.

“Mr. Vale!” one of them shouted, his hand resting menacingly on a heavy holster. “Step away from the civilians. Orders of the Board of Directors.”

Julian Vance’s voice echoed over a loudspeaker mounted near the ceiling, smooth and triumphant.

“I’m sorry, Richard. Democracy is a messy thing, but the board has already voted. Emergency conservatorship enacted. Hand over the child, and we can keep this quiet.”

Richard didn't flinch. He didn't even reach for a phone. Instead, a grim, humorless smile spread across his face.

“Julian,” Richard called out into the echoing cavern, his voice carrying effortlessly. “You always were an ambitious little parasite. Did you really think my father didn't keep a backup contingency?”

Silence stretched over the loading bay for three agonizing seconds.

“What contingency?” Julian’s voice crackled over the speaker, a hint of genuine unease bleeding through.

Richard pulled a heavy, old-fashioned brass key from his vest pocket—the exact key he had used to open the wooden box in the estate quarters.

“The original 1985 psychiatric commitment papers for Caroline,” Richard said loudly. “Signed by my father, falsified by your predecessor, and countersigned by a bribed judge. The document that proves Caroline wasn't insane—she was systematically drugged and locked away to steal her inheritance.”

The tactical guards froze mid-stride. Their hands hovered uncertainly over their weapons, looking back toward the control room intercom.

“You’re bluffing,” Julian snarled over the speaker.

“Am I?” Richard tossed the brass key onto the hood of the Mercedes, where it clattered loudly against the metal. “The original papers are already sitting in the secure digital drop-box of the Federal District Attorney’s office, scheduled to decrypt and publish automatically if my biometric life-sign stops updating every thirty minutes.”
