Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set at the Annual Gala

Three days later, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, biting autumn wind that rattled the glass panes of the Manhattan mansion.
Lily had fully recovered from her fever, thanks to a private pediatrician Marcus had secretly dispatched to Rosa's modest apartment with a full suite of medications and groceries that could have fed a family of five for a month. Rosa had tried to refuse, but the doctor had simply smiled and said, “Mr. Hail doesn't take no for an answer, Mrs. Delgado. Especially not when it comes to his new favorite people.”
Yet, despite the sudden influx of security, wealth, and protection, the atmosphere inside the mansion was thick with impending doom.
The annual Hail Real Estate Charity Gala was scheduled for Friday night at the Plaza Hotel. It was the biggest social event of the season—a glittering gathering of billionaires, politicians, and media moguls. It was also the exact night Gerald Pike had scheduled a special emergency board meeting to vote on Marcus’s "medical incapacity and immediate removal" as CEO.
Marcus sat in his custom-built, motorized leather wheelchair in his study, watching live security feeds on a bank of monitors.
Mrs. Callaway stood quietly by the door, her expression unreadable, though a subtle twitch in her jaw betrayed her deep loyalty to the man she had served for over a decade.
"He’s stepping up his timeline, sir," Mrs. Callaway reported, her Scottish accent crisp. "Pike has already bribed two members of the board—Director Vance and Director Sterling—with promises of high-ranking executive positions in the post-merger restructure. They plan to invoke Clause 9-B of your corporate charter tomorrow night at the gala."
Marcus stared at the screens, his fingers resting steadily on the chrome armrests. His physical therapy was slowly yielding results; he could wiggle his toes and bear slight weight on his legs for a few seconds, but he was far from ready to walk into a ballroom unaided.
"Let them invoke it," Marcus murmured, a dangerous, calculating gleam in his eye. "Let them walk right into the trap."
"And the girl, sir?" Mrs. Callaway hesitated, her gaze softening slightly. "Pike knows she was in your bedroom. His private security detail has been asking questions about Rosa Delgado’s background, her daycare, her apartment lease. They're looking for leverage."
Marcus's expression darkened into ice. "If Gerald touches a single hair on that little girl's head... I won't just ruin him financially. I will make sure he spends the rest of his natural life behind bars."
Meanwhile, downstairs in the staff quarters, Rosa was folding linens with shaking hands. She knew the stakes. She knew that Gerald Pike was a powerful, ruthless man who crushed anyone who stood in his way.
And yet, as she looked down at Lily—who was sitting on the rug, happily coloring a picture of a large green dinosaur with crayons Marcus had ordered online—a fierce, maternal courage swelled in her chest.

She wasn't just a poor maid anymore. She was part of a storm.
And the storm was about to hit the Plaza Hotel.
