Chapter 8 - The Truth Spoken by an Innocent Child

Defeated, cornered, and utterly exposed, Gerald Pike’s mask of corporate charm shattered completely. His face twisted into an ugly, venomous sneer of pure malice.

"You think you've won, you arrogant cripple?" Gerald snarled, losing all control as he marched to the edge of the stage, pointing a trembling finger down at Marcus. "Even if you expose me, the board is compromised! The regulators are bought! You can't prove I personally tampered with your medication! You can't prove I ordered the break-in at your mansion to destroy your physical files!"

Marcus stopped, his brow furrowing slightly. He hadn't mentioned the break-in at his mansion. The police report had only listed a routine security alarm failure.

Gerald had just confessed, live on camera, in front of the entire New York media elite, to a crime he hadn't yet been publicly accused of.

The realization hit the press gallery like lightning. Flashbulbs blinded the stage.

And then, before Gerald could backtrack, before security could drag him away, something miraculous happened.

Little Lily Delgado slipped her small hand out of her mother’s grip.

With the fearless, innocent determination that had first broken into Marcus’s locked bedroom days ago, the three-year-old walked right up to the front of the stage. She looked up past the blinding lights, past the terrified, sweating corporate executive, and lifted a small finger.

She pointed a direct, unwavering little hand straight at Gerald Pike.

The entire ballroom went dead silent, every camera lens zooming in on the toddler.

Lily tilted her head, her big dark eyes wide and crystal clear, and spoke in a sweet, piping voice that carried clearly through every microphone in the room:

"That bad man," Lily announced clearly, pointing right at Gerald. "He's the one who hid the black bottle under the bed and told the angry nurse to make the mister sleep forever."

Every breath in the grand ballroom hitched.

Marcus stared down at Lily, his breath catching in his throat as the final, missing piece of the puzzle clicked violently into place. The mysterious nighttime nurse who had vanished two weeks ago. The strange metallic taste in his evening water.

Gerald Pike stumbled backward, his face turning the color of ash, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "She... she's lying! She's a toddler! She doesn't know what she's—"

"Take him away," Marcus commanded, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding power.

Before Gerald could run, four federal marshals—secretly stationed by Marcus’s private legal team—stepped out from the press corps, placed heavy steel handcuffs around Gerald Pike’s wrists, and dragged him off the stage in disgrace as the flashbulbs blinded him from every angle.

The music in the ballroom never played again that night. But as Marcus Hail looked down at Rosa and little Lily—standing proudly beside him in the golden light of a new dawn—he realized something profound.
