CHAPTER 8 — Emma Heard the Voice

While investigators searched for evidence, life slowly returned to normal.

Emma and Lily started at their new school.

For the first time in years, they had their own bedroom.

Their own desks.

Their own backpacks.

One afternoon, Ethan visited the house carrying books and groceries.

As the adults talked in the kitchen, the television played quietly in the living room.

A news reporter announced that Nathan Caldwell had been denied bail.

The camera briefly showed Nathan speaking to his lawyer inside the courthouse.

Emma suddenly dropped her glass of juice.

The room froze.

"That's him."

Angela looked confused.

"Who?"

Emma pointed at the television.

"The man from the park."

Everyone turned toward her.

"What do you mean?"

Emma's face became pale.

"The day Mr. Caldwell fell down..."

"...before everyone started filming..."

"...that man was standing beside him."

Silence.

Lily slowly nodded.

"I remember too."

"He was wearing sunglasses."

"He bent down."

"We thought he was helping."

Emma whispered,

"He said something."

Marissa leaned closer.

"What did he say?"

Emma closed her eyes.

Trying to remember.

Then she repeated the exact words.

"Not today... old man."

The room went completely silent.

Samuel Reed immediately requested every surveillance camera surrounding Linden Park.

For three days technicians enhanced blurry footage from nearby stores, traffic lights, and apartment buildings.

Finally...

one forgotten security camera captured the moment just before Ethan collapsed.

Nathan walked beside him.

The two men exchanged a few words.

Nathan smiled.

He shook Ethan's hand.

Then...

seconds later...

Ethan grabbed his chest and fell.

Nathan looked down.

Turned around.

And calmly walked away.

Without calling for help.

Without looking back.

The evidence wasn't enough to prove murder.

But it proved something else.

Nathan had watched his own cousin collapse...

and chose to leave him there to die.
