CHAPTER 4 — The Woman They Tried to Bury

Victoria Hawthorne had never spent a night without silk sheets, private chefs, and people whispering yes to everything she demanded.

Now she sat in a cold interrogation room with mascara under her eyes and handcuffs on her wrists.

Across from her, a federal agent placed a folder on the table.

"Miss Hawthorne, do you know why you're here?"

Victoria forced a laugh.

"My lawyers will destroy this little performance."

The agent opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Contracts.

Bank transfers.

A recording transcript.

Victoria's smile faded.

The agent said quietly,

"Your lawyers are in the room next door."

Victoria blinked.

"They're being questioned too."

For the first time in her life, silence frightened her.

But what terrified her most wasn't the evidence.

It was the name printed on the first page.

Eleanor Carter.

Victoria whispered,

"That woman is dead."

The agent leaned forward.

"No."

"You just made the mistake of believing she was."

Years earlier, Eleanor Carter had been one of the sharpest financial investigators in America.

She had uncovered a massive corruption network hidden beneath luxury brands, charity foundations, political campaigns, and private investment firms.

At the center of it all...

Was the Hawthorne family.

Eleanor tried to expose them.

But Victoria's father destroyed her first.

They framed Eleanor for stealing company funds.

They turned newspapers against her.

They froze her accounts.

They made her lose her home, her career, and the only person who still believed in her...

Her younger brother, Daniel.

Daniel had died in a mysterious car accident one week before he was supposed to testify.

The police called it bad luck.

Eleanor knew better.

And from that day forward...

She stopped trying to clear her name.

She started collecting evidence.

Piece by piece.

Year by year.

She became invisible.

She worked under fake contracts.

Cleaned financial records for people who never looked her in the eye.

She entered the rooms of the powerful as "just the accountant."

And every time they laughed at her...

She saved another file.

Every insult became ammunition.

Every secret became a weapon.

Every humiliation became a reminder.

Until the night Victoria poured champagne over her head.

That was not the moment Evelyn broke.

May you like

That was the moment she finally decided...

They had earned the truth.
