CHAPTER 6 — The Daughter of the Dead Man

That evening, Evelyn was taken to a small house outside the city.
Her hands shook as she stepped onto the porch.
For twelve years, revenge had kept her alive.
But now she felt something far more dangerous than anger.
Hope.
The door opened.
A teenage girl stood inside.
She had Daniel's eyes.
The same gentle expression.
The same scar above one eyebrow.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
The girl whispered,
"Aunt Eleanor?"
Evelyn broke.
For the first time since the gala...
For the first time in twelve years...
She cried.
The girl's name was Lily Carter.
She was sixteen.
Her mother had died when she was little.
Martin Graves had raised her in secret, moving from town to town whenever the Hawthornes got too close.
Lily had grown up knowing only one thing:
Her father had died trying to tell the truth.
And her aunt was the bravest woman he had ever known.
Evelyn hugged Lily like she was holding the last piece of her brother's soul.
But the reunion did not last long.
Outside...
A black SUV slowed near the house.
Martin looked through the curtains.
His face changed.
"They found us."
Evelyn grabbed Lily's hand.
"Go to the back door."
Before they could move, the front windows shattered.
Men in dark suits rushed inside.
Martin was knocked to the floor.
Lily screamed.
Evelyn stepped in front of her.
One man pointed a gun and said,
"Miss Carter, you should have stayed buried."
Evelyn looked at him calmly.
"And you should have checked who was watching."
Suddenly...
Red and blue lights flooded the windows.
Federal agents stormed the house.
The armed men dropped their weapons.
Evelyn had known they might come.
So she had led them there on purpose.
Victoria had one last hidden network.
Now it was gone too.
As the attackers were dragged away, Lily stared at Evelyn in shock.
"You planned this?"
Evelyn gently touched her face.
"I spent twelve years learning how monsters move."
Then she looked toward the flashing police lights.
"But I'm done living for revenge."
Lily asked softly,
"What happens now?"
Evelyn looked at the girl...
Then at the sunrise beginning to break behind the trees.
"Now..."
"We take back the Carter name."
But miles away, inside a private hospital room...
Victoria Hawthorne received a secret phone call.
A weak voice whispered from the other end,
"Tell them nothing."
Victoria trembled.
"Father?"
The man everyone believed was dead...
May you like
Was still alive.
And the real mastermind had just opened his eyes.
