CHAPTER 5 — The Empire Falls

By the end of the week, New York's richest families were no longer attending galas.
They were hiding behind locked doors.
Luxury brands collapsed.
Politicians resigned.
Private jets were seized.
Charity foundations were exposed as money-laundering machines.
And Victoria Hawthorne became the face of it all.
The woman who had laughed in a ballroom was now surrounded by cameras outside federal court.
Reporters screamed questions.
"Did you frame Eleanor Carter?"
"Did your family cover up Daniel Carter's death?"
"Did you use charity money to protect criminals?"
Victoria lowered her head.
For once...
No one was laughing with her.
They were laughing at her.
Inside the courthouse, Evelyn sat in the back row wearing the same black dress from the gala.
Clean now.
Simple.
Powerful.
Victoria saw her.
Their eyes met.
Victoria's mouth trembled.
"You ruined me," she whispered.
Evelyn stood slowly.
"No, Victoria."
"I only opened the door."
"You walked through it years ago."
Then the prosecutor called the final witness.
Everyone turned.
An old man entered the courtroom with a cane.
The room went silent.
Victoria went pale.
It was Martin Graves...
The Hawthorne family's former driver.
The man everyone believed had disappeared after Daniel Carter's accident.
Martin raised his right hand and swore to tell the truth.
Then he revealed the secret that shattered the courtroom.
Daniel Carter had not died by accident.
He had been forced off the road.
And Victoria's father had ordered it.
But the true shock came next.
Martin placed an old envelope on the judge's desk.
Inside was Daniel's final letter.
Written to his sister.
The judge read it aloud.
"Eleanor, if anything happens to me, don't trust anyone in that family."
"They are not afraid of prison."
"They are afraid of one thing only..."
"The girl."
Evelyn froze.
The girl?
Then Martin looked directly at her.
"Your brother had a daughter."
The courtroom erupted.
Evelyn's breath caught in her throat.
"My brother had a child?"
Martin nodded with tears in his eyes.
"She was hidden to keep her alive."
"And now..."
"She wants to meet you."
Evelyn had spent twelve years chasing justice for the dead.
But suddenly...
The past was no longer buried.
May you like
It was alive.
And waiting for her.
