CHAPTER 1 — She Worked as a Maid in the Mansion... Until an Old Photograph Changed Everything

The day Olivia Carter stepped through the enormous iron gates of the Whitmore Estate, no one noticed her.

To them, she was just another maid.

Another poor young woman desperate for work.

Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore barely looked up from her tea before saying coldly,

"Your room is in the servants' quarters. Stay invisible, do your job, and never touch anything that doesn't belong to you."

Olivia simply nodded.

She had heard worse.

For twenty-two years, she had lived with unanswered questions.

She had grown up in foster homes.

No parents.

No family.

No surname that meant anything.

Only three things had stayed with her since infancy.

A tiny silver necklace with half of a broken heart.

A strange birthmark shaped like a butterfly behind her left shoulder.

And an old photograph that had been burned around the edges, showing a smiling couple holding a baby whose face had been damaged by fire.

No one knew who they were.

Except Olivia never stopped believing they were her parents.

When she accepted the maid position at Whitmore Estate, it wasn't because she needed money.

It was because of the mansion.

Years earlier, the social worker who raised her had whispered something before she died.

"If you ever want answers... go back to the biggest white mansion outside Ashford."

That mansion...

was Whitmore Estate.

So Olivia cleaned floors.

Served dinner.

Polished silver.

Pretended not to hear the insults from the other servants.

"Look at her clothes."

"She probably came from the streets."

"I bet she'll be fired before the week ends."

She stayed silent.

Every room she entered felt strangely familiar.

The staircase.

The music room.

Even the old rose garden.

Sometimes she stopped without realizing why.

As if her heart remembered places her mind had forgotten.

Late one rainy afternoon, Mrs. Whitmore ordered her to clean the locked attic.

"No one goes there anymore."

"Throw away anything that's worthless."

Dust covered everything.

Old furniture.

Boxes.

Portraits.

Broken toys.

Then Olivia noticed an ancient wooden chest.

Inside were dozens of family albums.

She wasn't trying to invade anyone's privacy.

She only wanted to wipe the dust away.

But as one album slipped from her hands...

an old photograph fell onto the floor.

Olivia froze.

Her breathing stopped.

The smiling man and woman in the picture...

were exactly the same couple from her own burned photograph.

Only this version wasn't damaged.

And in the man's arms...

was a little baby girl wearing...

half of a silver heart necklace.

Olivia instinctively grabbed the necklace around her own neck.

It matched perfectly.

Before she could think...

a furious voice exploded behind her.

"What are you doing with that photograph?"

Olivia turned around.

Mrs. Whitmore stood in the doorway.

Her face had gone completely pale.

Not angry.

Terrified.

She rushed forward, snatched the picture from Olivia's hands, and screamed,

"You were never supposed to see this!"

That was the moment Olivia knew.

She hadn't come to the mansion by accident.

Someone inside this house had been hiding the truth about her entire life.

And whoever that person was...

would do anything to keep the secret buried.

END OF CHAPTER 1...
