CHAPTER 2 — The Birthmark Behind Her Shoulder Made the Old Man Cry

That night, Olivia could not sleep.
The photograph haunted her.
Mrs. Whitmore’s face haunted her even more.
“You were never supposed to see this.”
Those words repeated in Olivia’s mind like a warning.
The next morning, everything in the mansion changed.
Mrs. Whitmore watched Olivia more closely.
The head housekeeper suddenly moved Olivia from the main rooms to the laundry basement.
And every time Olivia entered the hallway near the family portraits, someone quickly appeared and ordered her away.
But Olivia had already seen enough.
She knew the couple in the photograph.
The man was Richard Whitmore, Eleanor’s late husband.
The woman beside him was his first wife, Katherine.
And the baby in his arms…
had once lived in this mansion.
That afternoon, while Olivia was folding sheets in the laundry room, she heard a weak voice behind her.
“Child… come here.”
She turned and saw an old man in a wheelchair.
His name was Henry Whitmore.
The grandfather.
Everyone in the mansion said he had lost his mind after the disappearance of his granddaughter twenty-two years ago.
But his eyes were sharp.
Too sharp.
He stared at Olivia’s necklace.
His trembling hand lifted slowly.
“Where did you get that?”
Olivia touched the silver half-heart around her neck.
“I’ve had it since I was a baby.”
The old man’s lips parted.
His face lost all color.
“Turn around,” he whispered.
Olivia froze.
“What?”
“Please,” he said, his voice breaking. “Show me your left shoulder.”
Olivia hesitated, then slowly pulled the collar of her maid uniform aside.
Behind her left shoulder was the butterfly-shaped birthmark.
The old man began to cry.
Not quietly.
Not politely.
He cried like a man who had spent twenty-two years burying hope and had suddenly seen it breathing in front of him.
“My God…” he whispered. “You’re alive.”
Olivia’s knees almost gave out.
“What are you saying?”
Henry reached for her hand.
“My granddaughter had that birthmark. Katherine’s baby. Richard’s daughter. Her name was Lily.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No… my name is Olivia Carter.”
“That was the name they gave you after they took you.”
Before Olivia could ask who “they” were, a glass shattered near the doorway.
Mrs. Whitmore stood there.
Her eyes were wide with panic.
“Henry,” she said coldly, “you’re confused again.”
But the old man suddenly became furious.
“Don’t lie to me anymore, Eleanor!”
The entire mansion went silent.
Servants stopped in the hallway.
Olivia stood between them, her heart pounding.
Eleanor walked forward slowly, her voice smooth but dangerous.
“This girl is a maid. Nothing more.”
Henry pointed a shaking finger at the necklace.
“That necklace was made in two pieces. Katherine kept one half. The baby wore the other.”
Olivia whispered, “Where is the other half?”
Henry’s eyes filled with grief.
“Buried with Katherine.”
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“That is enough.”
But Henry wasn’t finished.
“The night the baby disappeared, Katherine died in the fire. Everyone believed the child burned too. But I never believed it.”
Olivia’s throat tightened.
“Why would someone take me?”
Henry looked directly at Eleanor.
“Because if Richard’s daughter lived, she would inherit everything.”
The room went cold.
Eleanor stepped back.
For the first time, Olivia saw fear in her eyes.
That night, Olivia packed her small suitcase.
She wanted answers, but she was also afraid.
Then, under her bedroom door, someone slipped an envelope.
Inside was a hospital record.
A birth certificate.
And one sentence written in trembling handwriting:
“Do not leave the mansion. The woman who raised you was paid to hide you.”
Olivia covered her mouth.
At the bottom of the paper was her real name.
Lily Katherine Whitmore.
And beneath it…
a fingerprint belonging to Eleanor Whitmore.
