CHAPTER 1 — THE JANITOR THEY CALLED "GHOST"

Every morning at exactly 5:15 a.m., before the first executive arrived, an old man quietly unlocked the glass doors of Brooks Global Headquarters.

His name was Ethan Brooks.

At least, that was the name stitched onto his faded blue janitor uniform.

To everyone else, he was simply "Old Ghost."

No one knew where he lived.

No one knew whether he had a family.

Nobody cared.

The security guards barely looked up when he entered carrying his dented mop bucket and a worn toolbox held together with duct tape.

For twelve years, Ethan cleaned the same thirty-two floors.

He polished marble that reflected luxury he never seemed to own.

He emptied trash cans overflowing with million-dollar contracts.

He scrubbed coffee stains left by executives who made more money before breakfast than he earned in an entire year.

Yet every morning, he smiled.

The employees hated that smile.

Especially Ryan Coleman.

Ryan had climbed from sales manager to Executive Vice President in only six years.

Arrogant.

Loud.

Always wearing thousand-dollar suits.

Always convinced that poor people existed to remind rich people how successful they were.

Whenever Ryan passed Ethan in the hallway, he had a routine.

"Morning, Grandpa."

No response.

"Still cleaning up after people smarter than you?"

Still silence.

Ryan's coworkers laughed.

Someone filmed it once.

The clip exploded inside the company's group chat.

They added clown music.

They called it:

"Daily Ghost Sighting."

For weeks, the videos spread through the office.

Nobody defended Ethan.

Not even Human Resources.

The old man simply continued mopping.

One rainy Tuesday, Ryan intentionally knocked over an entire cup of black coffee across the polished marble floor.

"Oh no," Ryan laughed loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.

"Looks like job security."

The hallway erupted with laughter.

Ethan slowly bent down.

His knees cracked from age.

Without saying a single word, he cleaned every drop.

Ryan leaned closer.

"You know what your problem is?"

Silence.

"You've accepted that this is all you'll ever be."

Still silence.

Then Ethan looked at him.

Only for a second.

His gray eyes were calm.

Almost...

Pitying.

"You should never judge someone," Ethan quietly said.

Ryan burst into laughter.

"Is that supposed to be wisdom?"

"No."

Ethan smiled gently.

"It's experience."

Ryan rolled his eyes.

"Whatever helps you sleep in your tiny apartment."

Ethan simply picked up his bucket and continued walking.

No anger.

No embarrassment.

No revenge.

That made Ryan hate him even more.

The company was preparing for its biggest event in history.

The founder's retirement gala.

Rumor said the mysterious owner of Brooks Global would finally appear in public after decades of hiding.

Nobody had ever met him.

The company operated through anonymous trusts.

Every CEO answered to an invisible board.

Even Ryan dreamed about impressing whoever controlled the empire.

He practiced speeches.

Bought a custom Italian tuxedo.

Prepared investment proposals.

"If I impress the owner," Ryan told his assistant, "I'll be CEO within a year."

The entire building buzzed with excitement.

Everyone...

Except Ethan.

He continued cleaning windows.

Changing light bulbs.

Watering the dying plants no one else noticed.

Late that evening, a young intern named Lily accidentally dropped an entire stack of confidential files down the marble staircase.

Papers scattered everywhere.

She panicked.

"If these disappear, they'll fire me..."

Before anyone else moved, Ethan quietly knelt beside her.

Together, they collected every page.

He even noticed one document had slipped beneath a vending machine.

Lily smiled through tears.

"Thank you."

Ethan simply nodded.

"Everyone deserves someone who helps when nobody is watching."

Ryan witnessed the scene.

He laughed.

"Look."

"The janitor found another loser."

Lily's face turned red.

She lowered her head.

Ethan said nothing.

The retirement gala arrived.

Crystal chandeliers filled the ballroom with golden light.

Politicians.

Celebrities.

Billionaires.

News cameras.

Ryan walked proudly through the entrance wearing his tailored tuxedo.

Then he froze.

Standing beside the ballroom doors...

Still wearing his blue janitor uniform...

was Ethan.

Ryan exploded.

"What the hell are YOU doing here?"

"This event is for executives."

Several guests turned to watch.

Someone whispered.

"Who invited maintenance?"

Ryan grabbed Ethan's shoulder.

"You've embarrassed this company enough."

"Security!"

Two guards hurried over.

Ryan pointed.

"Remove him immediately."

One guard politely asked,

"Sir... may we see your invitation?"

Ethan reached into the inside pocket of his worn jacket.

Instead of handing over a paper invitation...

He produced a small black key.

The head of security saw it...

And instantly went pale.

Without another word...

He saluted.

The entire ballroom fell silent.

Ryan frowned.

"What are you doing?"

The guard whispered only four words.

"So... it's really you."

May you like

And then...

Every executive in the room stood up.
