CHAPTER 7 — THE DOOR THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN OPENED

The bronze door creaked open with a sound that echoed through the underground vault like a whisper from another lifetime.
Amelia tightened her grip on the flashlight.
The room beyond wasn't another archive.
It looked like a command center frozen in time.
Walls covered with maps.
Rows of locked filing cabinets.
Old surveillance monitors.
Dozens of framed photographs.
Some showed presidents.
Others showed CEOs, judges, inventors, teachers, firefighters—even janitors.
Beneath every photograph was the same small silver emblem: a lantern.
"What is this place?" Lily whispered.
Daniel carefully lifted a leather-bound journal from the desk.
The first page read:
The Lantern Circle
"A company can change a city. A group of honest people can change the world."
Amelia's heart raced.
This wasn't just her father's company.
It was something much bigger.
Hidden inside the desk was a projector that powered on by itself.
Ethan appeared on the wall, smiling as if he had been waiting.
"If you've reached this room," he said, "then Brooks Global has survived its first storm."
"This room holds the records of the Lantern Circle—a private network of ordinary people placed in extraordinary positions."
"They were never spies."
"They were guardians."
"Teachers who protected children."
"Engineers who refused bribes."
"Judges who chose justice."
"Janitors who noticed what others ignored."
Amelia looked around in disbelief.
Thousands of names filled the shelves.
Ethan continued.
"But every light creates a shadow."
"There is another organization."
"They do not build."
"They buy."
"They do not inspire."
"They control."
"And they have spent decades trying to destroy everything we created."
The screen suddenly turned black.
One sentence appeared in white letters.
They already know you're here.
At that exact moment...
Every light in the underground vault went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then came the sound.
Footsteps.
Not one.
Not two.
May you like
Many.
Moving slowly toward them.
