CHAPTER 8 – The Letter That Changed Everything
Samuel carefully unfolded the brittle letter.
His hands shook so violently that William had to help hold the page.
The handwriting belonged to Richard Sterling—William's biological grandfather and the original founder of the Sterling empire.
Samuel began reading aloud.
"If you are reading this, then my greatest fear has come true."
"The fire happened."
"And Elena has taken control."
William's heart raced.
The letter continued.
"Samuel, I trusted only one man to protect my grandson."
"That man was you."
Samuel's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't understand..."
William urged him to continue.
The next lines shattered everything they believed.
"You agreed to fake your own son's death."
Samuel staggered backward.
"No..."
William stared at him in disbelief.
"What does that mean?"
Samuel buried his face in his hands.
"I remember..."
Fragments of memories crashed back into his mind.
Richard Sterling had begged him to hide little William after uncovering Elena's criminal network.
The only way to keep the child alive...
...was to convince everyone he had died.
But before the plan could be completed, the factory exploded.
Samuel was knocked unconscious.
When he woke up, William was gone.
For twenty-three years, Samuel believed the plan had failed.
Richard's final words were written at the bottom of the page.
"Trust no one carrying the Sterling name..."
"...except the child."
William slowly lowered the letter.
"So... you didn't abandon me."
Samuel collapsed to his knees, sobbing.
"I tried to save you."
At that exact moment...
A deafening explosion shook the underground vault.
The ceiling cracked.
Concrete rained down around them.
The emergency lights flickered on for the first time in decades.
Outside the steel door, dozens of footsteps echoed through the tunnel.
A deep male voice shouted:
"Find the letter!"
