Chapter 4 - THE DAWN AWAKENING

The morning sun broke over the maple-lined streets of Oakridge Estates at 6:30 AM, casting a golden hue over my immaculate front lawn.
Inside the house, Daniel and Vanessa had arrived thirty minutes prior, having driven back at breakneck speed. They had burst through the front door, shouting my name, only to find the master bedroom empty, my suitcase gone, and an ominous silence echoing through the halls.
Vanessa was pacing the living room, her face pale beneath layers of makeup. “She’s playing a game, Daniel! Your mother is just hiding at a hotel to scare us! Call the police! Report her as a missing person!”
Before Daniel could answer, a loud, authoritative knock rattled the front door.
Daniel threw the door open, ready to scream. Instead, he found a tall, broad-shouldered man in an expensive tailored suit holding a sleek leather briefcase, flanked by two uniformed county deputies and a professional moving crew.
“Good morning,” the man said smoothly, flashing a pristine business card. “Marcus Thorne. I’m the new owner of this property.”
Daniel staggered backward, nearly tripping over the welcome mat. “What? Are you out of your mind? This is our house! My mother owns it, and she didn’t sell anything!”
Marcus stepped past him into the foyer, his eyes scanning the high-end decor with clinical detachment. “Actually, Mr. Hart, the deed was transferred at 4:15 AM under an emergency trustee liquidation clause. The cash funds cleared my escrow account an hour ago. Here is your official Notice to Vacate, effective immediately.”
Vanessa rushed into the foyer, screeching at the top of her lungs. “This is a scam! We live here! We have rights! We’ve lived here for eighteen months! You can’t just kick us out!”
One of the deputies stepped forward, resting a hand calmly on his utility belt. “Ma’am, the title is clean, registered, and verified by the county clerk. You have two hours to remove your personal belongings from the premises before the locks are changed and the security codes are wiped.”
“Call your mother!” Vanessa screamed, shaking Daniel by the shoulders. “Call her right now and make her fix this!”
Daniel’s hands shook as he pulled out his phone, dialed my number, and put it on speaker.
It rang three times. Then, a calm, steady voice answered.
