Chapter 6 - THE NEW HORIZON

Two weeks after the confrontation at the steakhouse, I stood on the wraparound balcony of my new penthouse apartment overlooking the glittering ocean.
The salt breeze caught the ends of my silver hair, carrying with it the scent of freedom and new beginnings. There were no footsteps thundering down the hallway at midnight. No loud, uninvited parties in the living room. No snide remarks whispered behind my back about how long I had left to live.
My phone buzzed on the patio table. It was James.
“Eleanor,” he said, his voice warm with amusement. “I thought you should know. Daniel took a job at the local warehouse, and Vanessa has started interviewing for receptionist positions. They missed their second motel rent payment yesterday.”
I gazed out at the horizon, watching a solitary sailboat glide across the golden waves. “Did they reach out to you?”
“They did,” James replied. “They wanted to know if you’d reconsider financial assistance for a security deposit on a small apartment.”
“And what did you tell them?”
“I told them,” James chuckled, “that Mrs. Hart is currently traveling abroad and cannot be reached.”
“Good,” I smiled. “Make sure they know I’m living my best life.”
“Where are you headed next, Eleanor?”
“Paris, James. Then maybe the Amalfi Coast.”
May you like
“Enjoy it, my friend. You earned every single mile.”
I hung up the phone and took a deep breath of the ocean air. For the first time in years, the future wasn't something I had to manage, endure, or defend. It was simply mine to enjoy.
