CHAPTER 1 — "THE BOY WHO BROUGHT HIS GRANDMOTHER TO PROM"

No one expected the biggest scandal of prom night to begin before the first dance.

The ballroom glittered with crystal lights. Expensive suits, designer dresses, limousines lined outside the entrance, and hundreds of students posed for photos as if this night would define the rest of their lives.

Then the doors slowly opened.

An elderly woman stepped inside.

She wore a faded floral dress that looked decades old. Her gray hair had been carefully pinned back, and she nervously clutched a tiny handbag whose leather had cracked with age.

Walking beside her was eighteen-year-old Ethan.

The entire room froze.

Then came the whispers.

"Who is that?"

"Isn't that the school janitor?"

"No way..."

Within seconds, whispers became laughter.

Phones appeared everywhere.

Students weren't taking prom pictures anymore.

They were filming Ethan.

One boy burst out laughing.

"Bro actually brought the cleaning lady as his date!"

Another shouted loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"Maybe she'll mop the dance floor after dessert!"

The room exploded with laughter.

Even several parents awkwardly looked away, embarrassed by what they were witnessing.

Ethan pretended not to hear.

Instead, he gently helped his grandmother remove her old coat.

"Are you cold, Grandma?"

Marta forced a smile.

"No, sweetheart... I'm fine."

But Ethan noticed her hands trembling.

He knew why.

For twelve years she had cleaned these same hallways before sunrise.

She had emptied trash cans, scrubbed toilets, polished classroom floors until they reflected like mirrors.

Most students never even learned her name.

To them...

She was just "the janitor."

Yet Ethan remembered every sacrifice.

He remembered nights when the electricity had been cut off because they couldn't pay the bills.

He remembered Grandma secretly pretending she wasn't hungry so he could eat the last piece of bread.

He remembered waking up one winter morning and finding her sewing his torn shoes by candlelight because buying new ones wasn't possible.

She never complained.

Never.

She simply smiled and said,

"One day you'll have a better life than mine."

That promise became Ethan's reason to keep going.

He studied while classmates partied.

He worked weekends repairing bicycles.

Every scholarship...

Every award...

Every achievement...

He dedicated to one woman.

Tonight wasn't about popularity.

It wasn't about impressing anyone.

Tonight belonged to her.

Across the ballroom, however, someone else had different plans.

Ryan Foster.

Captain of the football team.

Most popular student in school.

He watched Ethan with a cruel grin.

Ryan walked onto the dance floor, grabbed a microphone, and smirked.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

The music faded.

"I think we should all give a warm welcome to the woman who cleaned up after us for the last fifteen years."

The hall erupted with laughter again.

Ryan wasn't finished.

"In fact..."

He picked up a mop that had been left near the kitchen entrance.

"I think Ethan forgot his grandmother's dance partner."

He tossed the mop across the floor.

It slid until it stopped at Marta's feet.

The crowd howled.

Some students doubled over laughing.

Others recorded everything for social media.

Marta quietly lowered her head.

A single tear rolled down her cheek.

She whispered almost silently.

"Ethan... let's go home."

He looked into her eyes.

For eighteen years...

She had protected him from pain.

Tonight...

It was finally his turn.

He squeezed her hand.

"No."

He slowly walked toward the stage.

Toward the microphone.

Toward every person laughing.

And nobody realized...

May you like

The next five minutes would change hundreds of lives forever.

End of Chapter 1...
