CHAPTER 1 — The Wheelchair That Trapped the Liars

The first slap came with applause.

Alexander Blackwood sat silently in the center of the grand ballroom, wrapped in a gray blanket, his motionless legs hidden beneath an expensive wheelchair.

Crystal chandeliers shimmered overhead.

A live orchestra played soft music.

More than four hundred guests—politicians, celebrities, business partners, and relatives—had gathered for what the media called The Blackwood Family's Miracle Celebration.

They believed Alexander had survived a horrific mountain-road accident.

They also believed he would never walk again.

Only three people knew the truth.

His doctor.

His attorney.

And the head of his private security team.

His spine had never been permanently damaged.

Everything else was real.

The crash.

The blood.

The ambulance.

The months of rehabilitation.

But Alexander had secretly recovered weeks ago.

Instead of revealing it, he made a different choice.

He wanted to know who truly loved him once the money and power seemed gone.

The answers came faster than he imagined.

His fiancée, Victoria Sinclair, stepped onto the stage wearing a dazzling diamond gown worth more than most families earned in a lifetime.

She smiled sweetly toward the cameras before turning to Alexander.

Then her smile disappeared.

"I've sacrificed everything for you," she said loudly enough for every microphone to catch.

"I never imagined my future husband would become... this."

The room fell silent.

Alexander lowered his eyes.

Victoria continued.

"A man who can't even stand without help shouldn't expect to lead a billion-dollar empire."

Laughter spread across several tables.

Some investors nodded.

Others avoided eye contact.

Alexander remained completely still.

Then his younger cousin Ethan stood up.

"I think it's time the board chooses someone who can actually run the company."

Another wave of applause.

One director raised a champagne glass.

"The Blackwood Group deserves a healthy leader."

Alexander's own uncle smiled.

"Perhaps retirement is best."

His mother looked away.

Not a single word.

Not one defense.

The betrayal hurt more than the accident ever had.

But it wasn't over.

Victoria walked behind his wheelchair and leaned close enough that only he could hear.

"When the lawyers finish transferring your voting shares to me after the wedding..."

She smiled.

"...I'll make sure you disappear quietly."

Alexander's heartbeat slowed.

She wasn't joking.

She kissed his cheek for the cameras.

The audience applauded again.

Hidden beneath Alexander's watch was a tiny recording device.

Every word.

Every whisper.

Every threat.

Captured.

His security chief, Marcus, watched from the back of the ballroom.

Without speaking, Alexander gently tapped one finger against the wheelchair.

Once.

The signal.

The test had officially begun.

He wasn't searching for betrayal anymore.

He had already found it.

Now he wanted to know...

How far they were willing to go.
