CHAPTER 5 — The Man Who Stood Up... and the Room That Turned Against Him

For nearly five seconds, no one moved.

Alexander stood in the center of the cathedral, breathing heavily as shattered stained glass rained onto the marble floor.

The wheelchair lay overturned behind him.

The sniper's bullet had missed Emily by inches.

But something far more devastating had just happened.

Every lie had collapsed.

Guests stared in disbelief.

Several directors looked as if they had seen a ghost.

A reporter dropped his camera.

Someone whispered,

"He can walk..."

Another voice answered,

"He lied to all of us."

Alexander slowly helped Emily to her feet.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

"It was the only way to find out who wanted me destroyed."

Before anyone could respond, Victoria stepped forward, tears streaming down her face.

"You manipulated everyone!" she cried.

"You let us believe you were helpless!"

She turned toward the cameras.

"This man has been deceiving his family, his employees, and the public for months!"

Some guests nodded immediately.

Others began recording with their phones.

Within minutes, the internet would explode.

Alexander realized the organization had prepared for this.

The truth didn't matter.

Only the story people believed.

Then Ethan pointed toward Alexander.

"He staged the accident!"

"He faked everything to gain sympathy!"

Several board members instantly demanded an emergency vote to remove him permanently.

Exactly as planned.

Marcus leaned close.

"They're trying to make you the villain."

Alexander smiled for the first time.

"They're too late."

He pressed a small remote hidden inside his jacket.

Every screen inside the cathedral flickered to life.

The recording from the gala appeared.

Victoria's voice echoed through the hall.

"Once your voting shares belong to me... I'll make sure you disappear quietly."

Silence.

Another clip followed.

Ethan speaking privately with Victoria.

"The poison is working. Give him another month."

Gasps spread through the audience.

Then another recording.

Alexander's uncle.

"Once he's dead, no one will ever question the will."

Panic erupted.

Directors backed away from the conspirators.

Victoria's face turned white.

"You hacked those recordings!"

Alexander looked directly at her.

"No."

"I simply let you tell the truth."

Police officers suddenly entered through every doorway.

Someone had anonymously reported an attempted murder.

The conspirators realized the trap had closed.

But one person wasn't frightened.

An elderly board member quietly stood up.

He slowly removed the black raven ring from his finger.

Then he smiled.

"You still don't understand, Alexander."

"This family was never the target."

"It was only... the beginning."

Before anyone could stop him...

He bit into a hidden cyanide capsule.

He collapsed instantly.

Dead before he hit the floor.

Clutched tightly in his hand was a small brass key engraved with one word.
