CHAPTER 3 — The Man Who Refused To Die

Claire was handcuffed before she reached the front door.

Jason was arrested at the abandoned cabin only minutes later.

Both screamed the same words.

"We didn't kill him!"

"It was an accident!"

The detectives said nothing.

Instead...

They placed a tablet on the interrogation table.

A video began to play.

Daniel.

Alive.

Recorded three weeks before the trip.

"My name is Daniel Ashford."

"If you're watching this..."

"My wife finally tried to murder me."

He looked directly into the camera.

Calm.

Certain.

"I wasn't disabled because of fate."

"I became disabled after someone tampered with my brakes eighteen months ago."

"I hired private investigators after discovering inconsistencies."

"What they uncovered..."

"Destroyed my marriage."

Photos filled the screen.

Claire.

Jason.

Secret apartments.

Offshore accounts.

Life insurance applications.

Failed murder attempts disguised as accidents.

Daniel had known everything.

For months.

But then...

The biggest revelation arrived.

The detective leaned forward.

"You still don't understand, do you?"

Claire stared silently.

"The wheelchair..."

"...was never carrying Daniel."

Her eyes widened.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

The detective played another clip.

The night before the trip.

Inside a secure warehouse.

Professional special-effects artists.

A medical rescue team.

A custom-built wheelchair.

A lifelike silicone body double wearing Daniel's clothes.

From only a few feet away...

No one could tell the difference.

The dummy had been weighted to match Daniel's body.

When Jason pushed it...

It fell exactly as expected.

The blood on the rocks?

Animal blood prepared in advance.

Everything...

Had been part of Daniel's counter-trap.

"So where is Daniel?"

The detective smiled.

"He never went near the cliff."

"He watched the entire thing from a hidden observation point across the valley."

The same hidden camera...

Had captured the murder attempt.

Legally.

Clearly.

Irrefutably.

One week later...

Every television station in America interrupted programming.

Daniel Ashford appeared live.

Standing.

Walking.

Without a wheelchair.

Reporters gasped.

The public froze.

He revealed the truth.

After the first attack eighteen months earlier...

He had secretly undergone an experimental rehabilitation program overseas.

Against all expectations...

He recovered.

Completely.

But he kept his recovery hidden.

He wanted to know one thing.

Would his wife love him...

Or kill him?

He finally had his answer.

Six months later...

Claire and Jason were convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and multiple related crimes.

Every asset they hoped to inherit...

Was seized.

Daniel donated a large portion of his fortune to rehabilitation hospitals for people with disabilities.

During the dedication ceremony, he said quietly,

"The cruelest disability isn't losing the ability to walk."

"It's loving someone who was only waiting for you to fall."

The audience stood in silence.

Because everyone understood...

The real miracle wasn't that Daniel survived.

May you like

It was that evil...

Had finally pushed itself over the edge.
