CHAPTER 7 — The Skeleton Beneath the Waterfall

Michael's final words haunted Daniel for days.

"You still don't know what really happened the day you became disabled."

The sentence echoed through his mind every night.

It wasn't a threat.

It sounded...

Like a confession.

Three days later...

Heavy rain swept across the valley.

The waterfall's current slowed after emergency engineers temporarily diverted part of the river for maintenance.

For the first time in years...

The rocky basin beneath the cliff became visible.

A rescue worker spotted something unusual.

Not Daniel's wheelchair.

Not broken metal.

A human skeleton.

The entire area was immediately sealed off.

Forensic teams worked through the night.

The skeleton had been hidden beneath layers of rock and sediment for nearly twenty years.

Around one wrist...

A luxury watch.

Still intact.

Inside the pocket of a decayed jacket...

A waterproof metal capsule.

Detective Rebecca Collins carefully unscrewed the cap.

Inside was a tiny flash drive.

Miraculously...

It still worked.

The next morning...

Daniel sat silently in the police lab.

The recovered files appeared on the screen.

A video began.

An older man looked directly into the camera.

Daniel's breath caught in his throat.

His father.

Edward Ashford.

The man everyone believed had died from a heart attack twenty years earlier.

But this recording had been made only hours before the skeleton was hidden beneath the waterfall.

Edward spoke slowly.

"If anyone is watching this..."

"I've been betrayed."

"Not by strangers."

"By my own family."

Daniel felt the room spinning.

Edward continued.

"My youngest son..."

"Michael..."

"Discovered I was changing my will."

"I decided Daniel should inherit control of the company because he earned it."

"Michael found out."

"He begged."

"He threatened."

"When neither worked..."

"He arranged this meeting."

Edward turned the camera toward the cliff.

The very same cliff.

"If I disappear..."

"It wasn't an accident."

The recording suddenly shook violently.

A familiar voice shouted from behind.

"Dad!"

Michael.

Much younger.

Much angrier.

The camera hit the ground.

The screen filled with blurred images.

A struggle.

A scream.

Then...

Nothing.

Silence consumed the room.

Detective Collins slowly looked toward Daniel.

"The DNA matches."

"The skeleton..."

"...is your father."

Daniel closed his eyes.

For twenty years...

He had mourned a lie.

His father hadn't died naturally.

He had been murdered.

At the same waterfall where Daniel himself had nearly been killed.

Michael was brought into an interrogation room.

This time...

The evidence was undeniable.

The skeleton.

The recording.

The DNA.

The fingerprints on the metal capsule.

He stared at the screen for a long time.

Then...

He laughed.

A cold...

Empty laugh.

"You finally know."

"No one ever chose Daniel."

"I made sure they couldn't."

Detective Collins leaned forward.

"You killed your own father."

Michael smiled without emotion.

"He made his choice."

"So..."

"I made mine."

The courtroom was packed months later.

Every seat was filled.

Journalists from around the world waited in silence.

Michael stood before the judge with no expression.

When asked if he had anything to say...

He looked directly at Daniel.

"I spent my whole life trying to become you."

"But the truth is..."

"I stopped being human long before I became a murderer."

For the first time...

Daniel didn't feel hatred.

Only sadness.

Because the greatest fortune their father had tried to leave behind...

Was never the company.

It was family.

And greed had buried it beneath a waterfall for twenty years.

As Michael was led away in handcuffs for the final time...

Daniel quietly whispered to himself,

"The cliff didn't destroy my life."

May you like

"It revealed the people who already had."
