Nikolai turned his gaze toward Julian Vance. The groom visibly flinched under the scrutiny.
“Do you really think the Vance family was unaware of the Bellamy financial fraud?” Nikolai asked, a dark, mocking smile touching his lips. “Julian’s father is drowning in debt to my syndicate. This marriage wasn’t just a social event; it was a laundering scheme. The Vance family needed the Bellamy dowry—Mara’s stolen money—to pay off the Volkov syndicate.”
The revelation hit the room like a thunderbolt. Julian sank into a nearby chair, burying his face in his hands. The perfect, aristocratic wedding had transformed into a grotesque circus of criminals and frauds.
“So,” Nikolai continued, turning back to Mara, his demeanor shifting from an investigator to a predator. “The Bellamys are bankrupt frauds. The Vances are debtors. And you, Mara Ellison, are technically the wealthiest woman in this room—and the most unprotected.”
Mara felt a chill run down her spine. “I can hire lawyers. I have the proof now.”
“Lawyers take months. The Bellamys will tied you up in appeals, or worse, make sure you meet the same fate as your parents,” Nikolai whispered, stepping intimately close, his breath brushing against her ear. “The fire that killed your parents was no accident, Mara. It was arson. And the man who ordered it is sitting right in this room.”
Mara’s breath hitched. She looked around the panicked crowd. Her uncle, Richard Bellamy, was quietly edging toward the back exit.
“I can give you justice within the hour,” Nikolai offered, his voice laced with absolute authority. “I can return your empire, avenge your parents, and erase these parasites from your life permanently. But my services are never free.”
“What do you want?” Mara asked, her heart pounding against her ribs.

Nikolai reached down, picking up the pale gold rope that had previously bound her. He draped it loosely over his palm. “I need a legitimate face for my international shipping ports. A clean name. A brilliant mind. Marry me instead today, Mara. Sign the registry with my name, and I will burn your enemies to ash.”
The entire ballroom held its breath. The mafia boss was hijacking the wedding, offering the ultimate protection at the ultimate price.
