Chapter 4 - The Altar of Vengeance

Viral Headline: CHOSEN AT THE ALTAR: SHE MARRIED THE MAFIA BOSS TO EXPOSE HER PARENTS' KILLERS!Mara looked from her trembling, criminal uncle to the cold, calculating mafia lord standing before her. The choice was madness. To marry a man known for ruthlessness to escape a family built on blood and lies.

But looking at Vivienne, who was now weeping on the floor, and her uncle, who was about to escape, Mara made her decision.

“Get the priest,” Mara said, her voice ringing out with terrifying clarity.

The crowd gasped. Vivienne screamed, “No! This is my day! You can’t take this from me!”

“Your day ended the moment you tied me to that pillar, Vivienne,” Mara said coldly.

Within fifteen minutes, the lavish ballroom was rearranged. The guests, too terrified of Nikolai’s armed men to leave, took their seats in stunned silence. Julian Vance had been dragged away by Nikolai’s enforcers to discuss his family’s outstanding debts.

Mara stood at the floral arch, her simple, elegant cream dress contrasting sharply with the chaotic environment. Beside her stood Nikolai Volkov, imposing and victorious in his black tuxedo.

The priest’s hands shook violently as he read the vows. When it came time to exchange rings, Nikolai slipped a massive, flawless emerald ring onto Mara’s finger—a family heirloom of the Volkov line.

“I pronounce you husband and wife,” the priest whispered, eager to escape.

Nikolai didn't kiss her. Instead, he leaned down and whispered, “Welcome to the family, Mrs. Volkov. Now, let us collect your wedding gifts.”

Nikolai turned to his men. “Bring Richard Bellamy to the center stage.”

Two heavy-set guards dragged Mara’s uncle out from the crowd, throwing him to his knees on the very white carpet Vivienne had planned to walk down. Richard was sweating profusely, his expensive suit soaked in fear.

“Six years ago, you paid an arsonist named Marcus Vance—Julian’s uncle—to lock your brother and his wife inside their estate,” Nikolai stated, presenting a fresh file of evidence to the crowd. “You wanted the shipping empire. You thought Mara would be easy to control.”

“It’s a lie! You can’t prove anything!” Richard yelled.

“I don't need to prove it to a court, Richard,” Nikolai smiled darkly. “I am the court. And your execution begins with your complete and total financial ruin.”

With a single text sent by Nikolai, the Bellamy corporate stocks began to plummet on the global market as hidden shell companies were exposed. But just as Mara felt a sense of closure washing over her, a sudden power outage plunged the entire venue into pitch-black darkness.
