CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL EVERYONE LAUGHED AT
The interview room exploded with laughter.
A twelve-year-old girl sat calmly at the end of a massive conference table while some of the most powerful executives in the city openly mocked her.
Richard Hoffman, billionaire founder and CEO of Hoffman Global Enterprises, leaned back in his chair and smiled sarcastically.
"Seven languages?" he asked.
The girl nodded.
"Yes, sir."
The executives exchanged amused glances.
One of the directors chuckled.
"And what are your qualifications?"
The girl calmly opened her folder.
"My name is Sophia Carter. I have certificates from international language competitions and translation programs."
The room laughed again.
Richard didn't even look at the papers.
"Little girl, these jobs are for adults."
Sophia wasn't offended.
She simply asked,
"Would you like me to demonstrate?"
Richard smirked.
"Fine. Entertain us."
One executive immediately switched to French.
Sophia answered flawlessly.
Another spoke German.
She replied without hesitation.
Spanish.
Italian.
Russian.
Chinese.
One by one they tested her.
One by one she answered perfectly.
The laughter slowly disappeared.
Several executives straightened in their seats.
One director quietly whispered,
"Impossible..."
Richard's smile faded.
For the first time, he looked carefully at the girl.
Then something unusual happened.
Sophia looked around the room and asked calmly,
"May I ask a question now?"
Richard crossed his arms.
"Go ahead."
The girl pointed toward a large screen mounted on the wall.
"Can you display your European acquisition contract from last year?"
The room froze.
Several executives exchanged nervous looks.
Richard frowned.
"Why?"
Sophia smiled slightly.
"Because your German translation contains a mistake worth approximately forty-two million dollars."
The silence became so heavy that nobody moved.
Then people started laughing again.
A child criticizing a multinational corporation?
Ridiculous.
Richard pressed a button.
The contract appeared on the screen.
Sophia stood up.
Then she began reading.
Line by line.
Word by word.
Switching between German and English.
Correcting phrases.
Explaining legal terminology.
Showing translation errors.
Showing financial inconsistencies.
Showing clauses that had been interpreted incorrectly.
Five minutes later nobody was laughing.
Ten minutes later several directors looked pale.
Fifteen minutes later the company's chief legal officer stood up.
His hands were shaking.
"She's right."
The room went silent.
Completely silent.
Richard slowly turned toward his executives.
"What did you just say?"
The attorney swallowed hard.
"The translation error changed the meaning of the contract."
Sophia calmly finished her explanation.
"The company lost approximately forty-two million dollars because nobody noticed."
For the first time in years...
