CHAPTER 4 — The Contractor Turned Pale… Then Ordered Everyone Out of the House

By sunrise, our entire home had become a construction zone.

The contractor carefully removed more drywall around the nursery while two environmental specialists waited outside with testing equipment.

Daisy refused to leave the room.

Even with her paws wrapped in bandages, she sat quietly beside the crib, watching every movement.

Then the contractor suddenly stopped.

He didn't say a word.

His face drained of color.

"Everyone needs to step outside. Now."

My stomach dropped.

"What did you find?"

Instead of answering, he slowly pulled away another section of insulation.

Behind it was a massive hidden cavity stretching far beyond the nursery.

Black mold coated almost every wooden beam like thick paint.

Water dripped slowly from an old cracked pipe that had apparently leaked for years.

But that wasn't the worst part.

The insulation was crawling.

Cockroaches poured out by the dozens.

Silverfish darted into the darkness.

The entire wall had become a breeding ground for insects.

One specialist immediately checked the air quality.

Within minutes, his monitor began flashing red.

"Close every bedroom door," he said.

"Nobody sleeps here tonight."

I looked at my daughter.

For months she had been breathing air that came directly through those contaminated walls.

Every cough.

Every sleepless night.

Every terrifying struggle to breathe...

Suddenly made perfect sense.

But then one inspector asked a question that chilled me.

"Has anyone else in the family been waking up with headaches?"

My husband and I looked at each other.

Almost every morning.

We had blamed stress.

Apparently...

We had been poisoning ourselves without even realizing it.

The inspectors weren't finished searching the house.

And what they discovered next made the situation far more dangerous than mold alone.
