CHAPTER 5 — Daisy Led the Inspectors to One More Wall… And Everything Changed Again

As workers continued opening the nursery wall, Daisy suddenly stood up.
She began whining.
Then she walked into the hallway.
She stopped outside our master bedroom.
Her nose pressed against another section of drywall.
Scratch.
Scratch.
Scratch.
The room fell completely silent.
One inspector exchanged nervous glances with the contractor.
"Open it."
Within minutes, another hole exposed the inside of the wall.
Everyone froze.
The same black mold.
The same insects.
But hidden beneath the damaged insulation was something far more alarming.
Electrical wires.
Their protective coating had almost completely melted away from years of moisture exposure.
Several sections were blackened from heat.
One wire had already started arcing against a metal bracket.
The electrician who arrived later shook his head in disbelief.
"You've been incredibly lucky."
"One spark..."
He pointed toward the nursery.
"...and this entire house could have caught fire while your baby was sleeping."
I couldn't even speak.
First the mold.
Then the contaminated air.
Now a hidden fire hazard only a few feet away from my daughter's crib.
That night, sitting in a hotel room, I watched Daisy sleeping beside the baby.
For the first time in weeks, my daughter wasn't coughing.
She slept peacefully for nearly eight straight hours.
I suddenly realized something heartbreaking.
Every time Daisy scratched that wall...
She wasn't ruining our home.
She was begging us to listen.
And we kept telling her she was a bad dog.
I buried my face in her neck and whispered through tears,
"I'm so sorry."
Daisy gently licked my hand...
May you like
As if she'd already forgiven me.
But the biggest surprise was still waiting for us.
