Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the Warm Car

Daniel Mercer stared down at the little girl, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The wind howled across the desolate Ohio transit stop, whipping her thin pink sweater around her small frame. She clutched the red envelope to her chest with a fierce, heartbreaking desperation.
"What's your name, sweetheart?" Daniel asked, crouching down to eye level despite the biting frost freezing his own tailored trousers.
"Lily," she whispered, her lips turning pale blue. "And my daddy’s truck is coming back. He just... he just went to get gas. He told me to wait right here."
Daniel’s chest tightened. He owned half the commercial real estate in Columbus, managed multi-million-dollar portfolios, and closed corporate acquisitions with ruthless precision. Yet, standing here on Christmas Eve, looking into the hollow, terrified eyes of a child abandoned in sub-zero temperatures, he felt completely helpless. He knew the look in her eyes. It was the look of a child practicing denial to survive.

"Lily, listen to me," Daniel said gently, pulling off his heavy wool coat and wrapping it around her shivering shoulders. It swallowed her whole, smelling faintly of expensive cedar and espresso. "You're coming with me. We are going to get warm, and we are going to find out what's inside that envelope."
As he scooped her into his arms, Lily clutched the red paper tighter. A single word was scrawled across the front in jagged, frantic handwriting: OPEN ONLY IF I DON'T RETURN.
