Chapter 5 - The Tables Turn

Daniel didn't flinch. Instead, a grim, terrifying smile crossed his face.
"You always did make one fatal flaw, Ted," Daniel said, his voice echoing calmly through the silent study. "You think you're the smartest predator in the room, but you never check who owns the infrastructure you're standing on."
Vance frowned, tightening his grip on the gun. "What are you talking about?"
"This house isn't just a home," Daniel whispered. He tapped his smart-watch twice. "It’s a high-security corporate vault. When I accessed the municipal database tonight, my security protocol automatically flagged unauthorized data-mirroring from an internal IP address—your laptop, Ted."
Suddenly, the heavy oak study doors slammed shut with a thunderous automatic lock. Red emergency strobe lights flashed to life along the ceiling moldings.
Simultaneously, the smart-screens across the room lit up, broadcasting live audio feeds from the local police precinct, the state prosecutor's office, and—most importantly—the federal wiretap line Daniel had patched directly into the FBI’s white-collar crime division forty-eight minutes ago.
A metallic voice blared from the intercom system: "Theodore Vance, you are under federal surveillance for extortion, racketeering, and conspiracy. Drop your weapon immediately."

Vance’s face melted from arrogant triumph into absolute, unadulterated panic. He whipped around toward the door, firing a frantic shot into the wood, but it was already reinforced steel.
Before Vance could turn the gun back toward Daniel, the study window shattered inward. State troopers and federal agents flooded through the glass like a tidal wave, pinning Vance to the Persian rug and clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
