Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confrontation

Back at Daniel’s sprawling estate in Columbus, the security gates swung open automatically as his black SUV tore up the icy gravel driveway. But something was wrong. The sprawling smart-home lights were completely dark, save for a single amber glow burning in the private study.
Daniel carried a sleeping Lily inside, tucking her safely into the guest suite under the care of his trusted housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, before locking the door behind him.
He walked down the mahogany-paneled corridor toward his study. The heavy oak door stood slightly ajar.
Sitting in Daniel’s leather executive chair, feet propped up on the mahogany desk, was Theodore Vance. He held a glass of Daniel’s finest twenty-year-old scotch, swirling the amber liquid lazily.
"Mighty cold out tonight, Daniel," Vance said smoothly, not even bothering to look surprised. "You really shouldn't go snooping in municipal databases on a holiday. It ruins the festive spirit."
Daniel stepped into the room, his eyes cold as flint. "You used my name. You stole a township, you ruined hundreds of families, and you left a six-year-old girl freezing to death on a highway."
May you like
Vance chuckled, setting his glass down with a sharp clink. "Business is war, Dan. You built the empire; I just expanded the borders. And honestly? You're a liability now. The board was already planning to vote you out next month once the Harland Township re-zoning went public. I own the local judges, the police chief, and the bank accounts. Who do you think the cops are going to believe? A billionaire corporate tyrant, or the CFO who tried to stop him?"
Vance reached into his jacket, pulling out a silver-plated pistol and leveling it straight at Daniel's chest. "Merry Christmas, boss. Say goodbye to your company, and your life."
