Chapter 2 - The Crimson Secret

Inside the heated leather interior of Daniel’s SUV, Lily finally stopped shivering, though her eyes remained locked on the glove compartment where Daniel had carefully placed the red envelope.
"Do you want to talk about what's in there, Lily?" Daniel asked softly, handing her a cup of hot cocoa he had rushed to buy from the only open diner for miles.
She shook her head, her blonde hair catching the amber glow of the dashboard lights. "It’s from my mom. Before she... before she had to go away. Daddy said it was bad luck to open it early. But he was crying when he put me in the truck today. He said someone was coming to take everything. He said the 'Man in the Glass Tower' was going to ruin us."
Daniel froze. The Man in the Glass Tower. That was the infamous moniker local media and bitter competitors used for him—Daniel Mercer, the ruthless tycoon who bought up failing townships and redeveloped them without mercy. A cold sweat broke out on the back of his neck. What did his corporate empire have to do with this little girl and her frantic father?
Without another word, Daniel carefully slit open the red envelope. Inside was a single, folded sheet of lined paper and a heavy, brass skeleton key.

He unfolded the paper. His eyes scanned the ink, and the blood drained entirely from his face. It was a transfer deed—signed under extreme duress—surrendering the historic Harland Township family mill to Mercer Properties. But at the bottom, written in a shaky, terrified scrawl, was a postscript that changed everything:
"If you're reading this, they found us. Tell Daniel Mercer his own CFO is burying the eviction orders in innocent people's names. They didn't abandon her... they hunted us."
