Chapter 2 - THE SHATTERED ILLUSION

The sound of the plastic bottle hitting the sterile linoleum floor echoed like a gunshot in the quiet pediatric ward. Formula splattered across Mauricio’s expensive leather shoes, but he didn't even look down. His eyes were locked on Brenda, whose face had turned an ashen, ghostly white.
"Brenda?" Mauricio’s voice lost its arrogant edge, replaced by a sharp, defensive tremor. "Who the hell is this? What is he talking about?"
The stranger stepped forward. He wasn't dressed in designer clothes like Mauricio, but he carried an aura of absolute, unyielding authority. His hands trembled, not out of fear, but from a potent mix of heartbreak and boiling rage. Behind him, Esteban Ríos, Adriana’s sharp-witted attorney, adjusted his glasses, holding a legal folder like a shield.
"My name is Carlos Mendoza," the man said, his voice cutting through the heavy air. He didn't look at Mauricio; his eyes were fixed entirely on the baby in the stroller. "And that child has a strawberry-shaped birthmark on his left shoulder. Exactly like my four-year-old daughter. Exactly like me."
Mauricio let out a harsh, nervous laugh. "You're insane. Get the hell away from my son. Brenda, tell this psycho to back off!"
But Brenda couldn't speak. She had sunk to her knees, frantically trying to wipe up the spilled milk with a tissue, her hands shaking so violently she was barely making contact with the floor. She was weeping silently, avoiding everyone's gaze.
Adriana stood perfectly still, her medical tablet clutched tightly against her chest. She looked at her former best friend—the woman who had held her hand during failed IVF treatments, the woman who had whispered that everything would be okay while secretly plotting to steal her life. Seeing Brenda reduced to a trembling mess on a hospital floor brought no joy to Adriana, only a profound, chilling clarity.
"Mauricio," Esteban intervened, stepping between Carlos and the stroller to maintain legal decorum. "I suggest you calm down. Mr. Mendoza here isn't a random stranger. He is the CEO of Mendoza Logistics, and until fourteen months ago, he was Brenda’s employer. And, according to these medical records, her very frequent companion."
"Shut up! Shut your mouth!" Mauricio roared, stepping aggressively toward the lawyer. "Brenda got pregnant right after our divorce! The timeline matches perfectly! He's my son!"
"Is he?" Adriana finally spoke, her voice calm, icy, and resonant. The entire waiting room was dead silent; even the receptionist had stopped pretending to work and was staring open-mouthed. "Because if I recall correctly, Mauricio, you always blamed my body for our empty house. You spent seven years calling me broken. You spent seven years making me feel like less of a woman."
"Because you were!" Mauricio sneered, cornered and lashing out. "Brenda gave me what you never could!"
"No, Mauricio," Carlos Mendoza interrupted, his eyes flashing with pity and disgust as he looked at the arrogant businessman. "Brenda didn't give you a son. She gave you my son to cover up her embezzlement, and she used your fragile ego to fund her escape."

Brenda let out a sharp sob, covering her face.
Mauricio looked from Carlos to Brenda, the reality beginning to crack the thick veneer of his denial. "Brenda... look at me. Tell him he's lying. Tell him!"
