Chapter 6 - A NEW BEGINNING (THE UNEXPECTED TWIST)

Two years after the hospital confrontation, the atmosphere at the San Gabriel Hospital was celebratory. It was the grand opening of the Salcedo Women & Children’s Pavilion, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated entirely to advanced reproductive health and neonatal care, funded heavily by the settlement Adriana had won.

Adriana stood in the center of the beautiful, sunlit lobby, welcoming donors and colleagues. She was no longer the tired, anxious woman from two years ago. Her eyes sparkled with peace.

Esteban walked up to her, handing her a glass of champagne. "You did it, Dr. Salcedo. A true sanctuary for women who think they have no hope."

"We did it," Adriana smiled, leaning in to kiss his cheek. They had been happily married for six months, a relationship built on mutual respect, trust, and deep love.

Suddenly, Adriana’s assistant approached, looking hesitant. "Dr. Salcedo? There’s a patient in Room 304 who is refusing to speak to anyone but the Director. She’s... she’s in labor, but there are severe complications. She was transferred from the state correctional facility."

Adriana’s heart skipped a beat. The correctional facility.

She looked at Esteban, who immediately understood. "You don't have to go, Adriana. You're the Director. You can assign another specialist."

Adriana looked toward the elevators. For a brief second, the ghosts of her past threatened to resurface. But she looked around at the pavilion bearing her name—a place built on healing, not hatred.

"No," Adriana said firmly. "I am a doctor first."

When Adriana walked into Room 304, she saw a heavily guarded, frail woman chained to the bed frame. Brenda. Her hair was dull, her skin pale, and she was crying out in intense pain. Due to overcrowding and poor medical care in prison, her pregnancy had gone largely unmonitored.

Brenda looked up, her eyes widening in terror and shame when she saw Adriana in her white coat. "Adriana... please... don't let me die. Don't let my baby die. I know what I did... I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..."

Adriana didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, ignoring the chains, and grabbed Brenda’s freezing hand. "Calm down, Brenda. Look at me. Breathe. I am your doctor right now. You are safe."

The delivery was grueling, lasting four hours. Brenda’s blood pressure spiked dangerously, and at one point, the baby’s heart rate plummeted. But Adriana worked with absolute, flawless precision, guiding her team, refusing to let past malice dictate the survival of an innocent life.

With one final effort, a sharp, loud cry filled the delivery room.

The nurse cleaned the newborn and brought her over. "It’s a healthy baby girl, Doctor."

Adriana took the baby, wrapping her in a warm blanket. She walked over to Brenda, who was weeping with profound relief. But as Adriana looked down at the baby girl's face, her breath caught in her throat.

The baby had a very distinct, tiny, perfectly formed birthmark on her left wrist. A birthmark Adriana recognized instantly. It wasn't the strawberry mark of Carlos Mendoza. It was a unique, star-shaped mark.

The exact same mark Mauricio’s late grandfather had on his hand—a trait Mauricio had desperately bragged about inheriting, though he only had a faded version of it.

Adriana looked at Brenda, horrified realization dawning on her.

"The specialist's report..." Adriana whispered, her voice barely audible over the monitors. "Mauricio had severe oligozoospermia... it said conception by natural means was nearly impossible. Not completely zero. A one-in-a-million chance."

Brenda looked at the baby, then up at Adriana, her eyes wide with shock. "I... I slept with Mauricio again right before the trial... when he was drunk and begging me to help him win the case. I thought... I thought it was someone else's from inside the facility's furlough program..."

Adriana stared at the newborn child. The ultimate irony of fate had just unfolded in her hands.

Mauricio Landa, who had spent his entire life destroying his own marriage because he believed he was a flawless king denied an heir, had finally conceived a biological child. A child born to a convicted felon, delivered by the ex-wife he abused, in a pavilion dedicated to her triumph.

And Mauricio would never even know. Because according to the prison custody relinquishment forms Brenda had signed weeks prior, the child was to be placed permanently into the state adoption system the moment she was born.

Adriana looked down at the beautiful, innocent baby girl holding her finger. She looked at Esteban, who had just entered the room and was watching her with deep love.

Adriana smiled, a tear of complete fulfillment slipping down her cheek. Fate had a twisted sense of humor, but it always put pieces exactly where they belonged.

"She’s beautiful, Brenda," Adriana said softly, kissing the baby’s forehead. "And don't worry. She is going to have a very, very good life. Far away from the poison of the past."
