Chapter 3 - THE SEEDS OF DECEIT

Esteban opened the manila folder, pulling out a stack of documents. "Let's look at the real timeline, shall we? One year before your divorce from Adriana, Brenda was working as a senior accountant at Mendoza Logistics. Over a period of eight months, she funneled over three hundred thousand dollars into a private offshore account. When Carlos discovered the discrepancy and initiated an internal audit, Brenda panicked."
Adriana listened, the pieces of a painful puzzle finally clicking into place. She remembered those months clearly. Brenda had suddenly become deeply invested in Adriana's marriage, constantly encouraging her to take long weekend shifts at the hospital to "clear her mind" from the stress of infertility.
"She needed a scapegoat, and she needed a rich savior," Esteban continued, handing a copy of the bank statements to Mauricio, who took them automatically, his eyes wide with horror. "She knew you had a massive inheritance from your grandfather, Mauricio. She also knew you were desperate for an heir—a weakness she exploited beautifully."
"That's not true..." Mauricio whispered, staring at the financial documents showing transfers from Mendoza Logistics to an account under Brenda’s maiden name. "We fell in love. She comforted me..."
"She targeted you," Carlos Mendoza corrected him harshly. "She slept with both of us in the same month. When she found out she was pregnant, she knew I would demand a DNA test because I was already suspicious of her accounting fraud. But you? You were so blinded by your own arrogance and your desire to hurt Adriana that you didn't question a single thing. You legally acknowledged the child immediately, shielding her from my investigation by hiding her behind your family’s high-profile name."
Mauricio’s breath grew shallow. He turned to Brenda, grabbing her by the shoulders and pulling her up from the floor. "Is this true? Is he telling the truth?!"
"Mauricio, please, I love you!" Brenda wailed, finally finding her voice, her makeup smeared across her face. "Carlos was going to ruin me! He was going to put me in jail! I did it for us! I did it for the baby!"
"For us?!" Mauricio screamed, his face turning a dangerous shade of red. "You told me he was mine! You let me brag to my family, to my friends, to my ex-wife! I threw a massive party for his birth! I put him in my will!"
"And that brings us to the final piece of the puzzle," Adriana said quietly, stepping forward. She felt a strange sensation wash over her—not anger, but a profound sense of liberation. The heavy burden of guilt she had carried for seven years was evaporating into the sterile hospital air.
She reached into her lab coat pocket and pulled out another document, handed to her earlier by Esteban.
"What is that?" Mauricio demanded, his voice cracking.
"These are your medical records from the fertility clinic we used three years ago, Mauricio," Adriana said, her voice steady and clear. "The ones you insisted on managing because your uncle was the chief of radiology there. The ones you told me showed I was the problem."

"Adriana, don't do this here," Mauricio pleaded, a sudden flash of terror in his eyes.
"You didn't hesitate to humiliate me in front of my staff and patients five minutes ago," Adriana replied coldly. "Read the final diagnosis, Mauricio. Read it out loud."
