Chapter 4 - THE ULTIMATE HUMILIATION

Mauricio snatched the paper from Adriana’s hand. His eyes scanned the medical jargon, stopping on a highlighted section written by a specialist from a different city—a second opinion Adriana had never been allowed to see.
Diagnosis: Severe Oligozoospermia resulting in absolute male-factor infertility. Conception via natural means: Impossible.
The paper fluttered out of Mauricio’s hand, drifting down to join the spilled baby formula on the floor.
"You knew," Adriana whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "You knew the whole time. You knew you couldn't have children."
"I... I thought the treatment worked," Mauricio stammered, looking around like a trapped animal. The onlookers in the pediatric ward were whispering furiously, filming the entire interaction on their phones. "I thought Brenda was a miracle..."
"The only miracle Brenda performed was making a fool out of you," Carlos Mendoza said, stepping past Mauricio and kneeling down in front of the stroller. The little boy looked up at Carlos and giggled, reaching his tiny hands out toward the man who shared his eyes and his birthmark. Carlos’s face softened, a tear escaping his eye as he gently touched the boy's cheek. "Hello, son. Daddy’s here."
Brenda collapsed against the reception desk, sobbing uncontrollably. "Carlos, please don't take him away from me. Please..."
"The police are already waiting downstairs, Brenda," Carlos said, his voice dropping all warmth as he stood back up. "Between the embezzlement charges and the fraudulent birth registration, you won't be seeing this child for a very long time. My lawyers have already filed for emergency sole custody."
Mauricio stood frozen, looking at the child he had claimed as his supreme victory over his ex-wife. The boy he had used as a weapon to destroy Adriana’s self-worth was not his. He was biologically incapable of ever having a child of his own. His wealth, his pride, his petty vengeance—all of it had been built on a foundation of absolute lies.
"Adriana..." Mauricio turned to her, his voice cracking as he reached out a hand. "Adriana, please... we can talk about this. We can fix this. I was tricked. We were both victims..."
"Do not touch me," Adriana said, stepping back with absolute disgust. "We were not both victims. I was your victim for seven years. Brenda was just the mirror that showed you exactly who you are: a cruel, insecure coward."
She looked at her watch. Her meeting was starting in five minutes.

"Esteban, please handle the remaining paperwork for the asset division," Adriana said to her lawyer, not casting a single glance back at the wreckage of her past. "I have lives to save."
With a firm, confident stride, the Director of Medicine walked down the corridor, the clicking of her heels sounding like a victory march.
