Chapter 2 - The Red CageThe glass of her apartment door exploded inward in a shower of sharp, jagged shards.

Victor didn't jump. With lightning speed, he grabbed Tessa by the wrist, yanked her out into the hallway, and slammed her against his chest as the heavy man behind him—the bodyguard—pulled a silenced pistol and fired three rapid shots down the stairwell. Grunts of pain and the heavy thud of bodies falling echoed through the enclosed space.
"Move!" Victor commanded, his arm locked like steel around Tessa’s waist as he dragged her down the rear fire escape.
Tessa didn't scream; her ER training kicked in, replacing panic with cold survival instinct. She sprinted down the rusty metal stairs barefoot, the freezing air burning her lungs. Below, a sleek, armored black SUV was waiting with its rear doors tossed open.
Victor threw her inside onto the soft leather seat before sliding in beside her. The bodyguard leaped into the front passenger seat, shouting, "Go! Go! Go!" to the driver.
The SUV screeched away from the curb just as two dark sedans blew through the red light at the intersection, automatic gunfire tearing through the brick facade of Tessa’s apartment building.
Tessa pressed herself against the leather seat, staring at the shattered windows of the third floor where she had slept just twenty minutes ago. Her home, her quiet life, her safe routine—destroyed in seconds.
"Who are you?" Tessa demanded, rounding on Victor. Her voice shook, but her eyes blazed with fury. "What kind of monster brings a war to a nurse's doorstep?"
Victor calmly adjusted his silk tie, completely unbothered by the chaos behind them. "I am Victor Costa. Head of the Costa Crime Family. And those men shooting at your kitchen window belong to the Russian Bratva. They wanted my son to break my territory. You ruined their leverage."
"I saved a ten-year-old child!" she yelled.
"And in doing so, you crossed the deadliest cartel on the East Coast," Victor replied, turning his dark, piercing gaze onto her. "You think you're an innocent bystander, Miss Hayes. But in my city, innocence is just a lack of information. You belong to my debt now. And until I wipe out the Rostov syndicate, you live under my roof, under my rules, and under my protection."
"I have a job! I have patients!"
"You had a job," Victor corrected coldly. "As of five minutes ago, Tessa Hayes is officially listed as deceased in a tragic apartment gas explosion. If you walk out of my gates, you prove me right, and the Bratva will put a bullet in your spine before you hit the pavement."
The SUV pulled through massive, iron gates guarded by armed men into a secluded, fortress-like estate overlooking the ocean.
Tessa stepped out into the courtyard, surrounded by walls of stone and steel. She looked back at the closing gates, realizing the terrifying truth: she hadn't been saved. She had just been traded into a gilded cage.
And then, from the balcony above, a voice called down: "Dad? Is she the one who saved me?"

Tessa looked up and saw little Julian—but behind him, standing in the shadows of the doorway, was a face that made Tessa’s blood run cold. It was the Chief of Surgery from St. Jude’s Hospital, holding a file labeled PROJECT LAZARUS.
CHAPTER HOOK: Tessa realized her meeting with the boy wasn't an accident—her own hospital boss was working with the Mafia, and her medical credentials were the real reason she was dragged into this nightmare.
