Chapter 3 - Shadows of the ScalpelTessa’s breath caught in her chest. Dr. Arthur Vance, the distinguished, silver-haired head of St. Jude’s Emergency Department—the man who had signed her hiring papers three years ago—was standing on the second-floor balcony of a Mafia kingpin's mansion.

"Dr. Vance?" Tessa whispered, the word tasting like ash in her mouth.
Victor didn't look surprised. He motioned for his men to secure the perimeter and turned to Tessa. "Go inside, Miss Hayes. Wash the dirt off your feet. We have much to discuss."
Minutes later, Tessa was standing in a massive, oak-paneled study. The walls were lined with ancient books, surveillance monitors, and weapon racks. Dr. Vance stood near the fireplace, sipping scotch, avoiding her eyes.
"Explain this. Now," Tessa demanded, stepping toward her boss. "You're a doctor. You took an oath! What are you doing in the house of a cartel leader?"
Vance sighed, looking older than his sixty years. "Tessa... it's complicated. St. Jude’s isn't just a community hospital. It’s built on Costa territory. Victor funds our trauma center, our equipment, our free clinics."
"He launders his blood money through us," Tessa corrected sharply, her anger rising. "And what is Project Lazarus? Why was my name on that file?"
Victor walked behind his massive mahogany desk, leaning his hands on the polished wood. "Because, Miss Hayes, your midnight rescue of my son was not a coincidence. Julian wasn't just kidnapped for ransom. He was poisoned."
Tessa froze. "Poisoned?"
"A rare, synthetic neurotoxin developed by Russian military intelligence," Victor explained, his voice dropping to a terrifying register. "The Bratva didn't want to kill him outright. They wanted to use his agonizing death to make me surrender my shipping ports. Dr. Vance has been trying to manufacture an antidote for two weeks, but he lacked the specific genetic matching data to stabilize it."
Victor stood up straight and looked directly into Tessa’s eyes.
"You aren't just an ER nurse, Tessa. Seven years ago, before you dropped out of Johns Hopkins, you were the top research fellow in advanced cellular toxicology under Dr. Charles Vance. His brother."
Tessa felt the floor drop beneath her feet. Her past—the brilliant, dark past she had buried beneath long shifts and quiet living—was being ripped wide open.
"I left that life behind," she said, her voice trembling. "I swore I would never work in a lab again after what happened to my brother."
"Your brother didn't die of a drug overdose, Tessa," Vance said softly, finally looking up at her. "The Bratva killed him because he refused to synthesize the toxic compound they are currently using on Julian. Victor found out. He tried to save him, but he was too late."
Tessa’s world tilted. The lies she had lived with for seven years shattered in a single moment.

"Julian has forty-eight hours before the toxin causes irreversible brain death," Victor said, stepping around the desk until he was inches from her face. "You saved my son’s body on the street last night, Miss Hayes. Now I need you to save his mind in the lab. Synthesize the cure, and I will hand you the men who murdered your brother."
CHAPTER HOOK: As Tessa placed her hand over the lab keycard, a red warning light flashed across the mansion's monitors: INTRUDER ALERT - LEVEL 4 BREACH. Someone inside the house had just unlocked the vault.
