Chapter 5 - The Poisoned VaultThe heavy steel vault door slammed shut with a deep, hydraulic thud that sealed out the sound of gunfire from above.

"System Override Initiated," an automated synthetic voice chimed from the wall speakers. "Containment Breach Detected. Decontamination Protocol Active. Oxygen supply will be purged in 300 seconds."
The Russian mercenary spat a curse, dropping Tessa as he whirled around to blast three rounds into the electronic lock. The bullets ricocheted off the reinforced titanium casing, sparking harmlessly.
"You fool!" Vance screamed from the floor, clutching his broken wrist. "The blue mist from the broken vial! The automated security system detected the nerve agent! It's locking down the entire sub-level to prevent a citywide leak!"
Tessa scrambled to her feet, wiping a smear of blood from her lip. The air in the room was already growing thin, heavy with the sharp, chemical smell of oxidized copper.
Five minutes. Three people. Zero oxygen.
"Open it!" the Russian barked, grabbing Vance by the lapels of his lab coat and smashing him against the steel door. "Open it or I break your neck!"
"I can't!" Vance choked out, his eyes bulging. "It's hard-coded to Victor's biometric data! Only he can open it from the outside!"
Tessa ran to the main console. Her mind raced through chemical equations, lab safety protocols, and the research notes she had glimpsed earlier. The blue mist was spreading toward the upper air vents. If it escaped into the mansion’s main HVAC, everyone inside—including young Julian—would be dead within ten minutes.
"We don't need to open the door," Tessa yelled over the blaring siren. "We need to neutralize the airborne agent so the automated system overrides the emergency lock!"
"Neutralize it with what?" the Russian roared, pulling his secondary sidearm and aiming it at Tessa's head. "You have thirty seconds to fix this, woman, or I put a bullet through your brain!"
"Shoot me, and you die in this box," Tessa snapped back, not even looking at the barrel of the gun. She grabbed two chemical carboys from the emergency shelf beneath the workstation. "Ammonium nitrate and basic saline solution! It's an exothermic oxidation reaction! It will strip the nerve agent's chemical bonds!"
"That will cause an explosion!" Vance gasped.
"It will cause a thermal flash," Tessa corrected, mixing the solutions in a steel basin with shaking hands. "It will burn out the chemical agent and trigger the heat sensors on the door! It's our only chance!"
The timer on the wall flashed: 00:45.
The air was so thin Tessa’s vision began to spot with dark patches. Her lungs burned. The Russian mercenary fell to his knees, gasping for air, dropping his weapon as his body succumbed to oxygen deprivation. Vance was unconscious on the floor.
Tessa pulled an emergency flare from the wall kit. She poured the volatile mixture into the primary ventilation duct, struck the flare, and tossed it into the open shaft.
"Hold your breath," she whispered to herself.
BOOM!
A blinding flash of orange fire roared through the ventilation system. The shockwave knocked Tessa off her feet, slamming her back against the steel wall. The heat was scorching, singeing her hair and blistering the back of her hands.
Above the sound of her own gasping breath, the electronic chime sounded: Environmental Threat Neutralized. Manual Override Granted.
The heavy titanium doors slowly slid open.
Standing in the smoke, blood running down his cheek, holding a smoking rifle, was Victor Costa. He stepped over the unconscious Russian mercenary, his dark eyes locking onto Tessa, who was sitting on the floor, covered in soot, gasping for air.
"You blew up my basement," Victor said softly.
"You're... welcome," Tessa wheezed, holding up the intact hard drive containing the antidote research.
Victor walked over, knelt beside her, and took the drive. But his face wasn't relieved. It was deadly grim.

"We have a bigger problem, Tessa," Victor said quietly. "The Bratva didn't come for the antidote. They came for Julian. He's gone."
CHAPTER HOOK: Victor handed Tessa a burner phone that was vibrating in his pocket. On the screen was a live video feed of Julian tied to a chair—and sitting beside him was a man Tessa thought had died seven years ago: her brother.
