Chapter 6 - THE SILENT TREASON

Two weeks passed.

The news of Cameron Hale’s arrest and his exposure as a high-level enforcer for the Rossi Syndicate dominated the Chicago headlines. The district attorney’s office was dismantling Rossi’s network piece by piece, while Vincent’s empire stood taller and more powerful than ever.

Nora had transitioned from a helpless woman hiding in a nightclub to a central figure at Vincent’s side. She managed his public relations, helped manage his charitable foundations, and stood by him as a true partner.

Their relationship was no longer a show. In the quiet hours of the night, inside the private halls of the estate, they were devoted to one another.

However, peace in the underworld is always an illusion.

One afternoon, while Vincent was down at the harbor dealing with a freight shipment dispute, Nora was organizing documents in his private office. A hidden wall safe behind a bookcase had been left slightly ajar—a rare mistake from the usually meticulous Vincent.

Curiosity piqued, Nora gently swung the heavy iron door open.

Inside were stacks of offshore bonds, untraceable passports, and a thick leather-bound dossier labeled with a single word:

BENNETT.

Nora’s heart skipped a beat. She pulled the folder out and opened it on the desk.

Inside were detailed photographs of her life—not just from the past two weeks, but from three years ago. Photos of her at the diner, photos of her with Cameron, bank statements, her birth certificate, and medical records.

Attached to the front page was a handwritten note from Vincent’s chief intelligence officer dated two months before she ever stepped foot into the Velvet Room:

“Target Nora Bennett identified as the biological daughter and sole heir of Arthur Vance—the late founder of Vance Maritime, whose assets were illegally seized by the Rossi family. If Moretti secures her, we gain legitimate legal claim to 40% of the Chicago harbor infrastructure.”

Nora felt the world tilt on its axis. Cold air rushed into her lungs, making it impossible to breathe.

She hadn't stumbled into the Velvet Room by accident.

The doorman hadn't been distracted by a delivery driver.

The entire night—her escape, her desperate jump into his lap, his convenient protection—had been orchestrated from the very beginning. She hadn't saved herself. She had been steered directly into his hands like a pawn on a chessboard.
