Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of PierceWithin forty-eight hours, the financial empire of the Pierce family dissolved like salt in a storm.

Federal agents, acting on "anonymous tips" provided by Harbor Crown Logistics' legal division, raided the Pierce Corporation headquarters downtown. Seizure notices were plastered across the glass doors of their luxury residential developments. Arthur Pierce—Brandon’s father and a titan of Bellhaven’s municipal corruption—was arrested live on national television as he tried to board a private charter flight to the Cayman Islands.

The public scandal was colossal. Local news networks ran wall-to-wall coverage of the downfall, digging into the arrogant lifestyle of Brandon Pierce and his socialite circle.

Tiffany Monroe’s social media accounts were permanently banned across every major platform, and her name became a nationwide cautionary tale about cyberbullying and casual cruelty. The video of her throwing the Coke at Eleanor was re-released—not as a comedy clip, but as exhibit A in a rapidly expanding public investigation into the harassment of service workers.

Yet, despite the media circus raging outside, inside the Ricci estate, things were quiet.

The sprawling mansion perched on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic was a fortress of stone, glass, and manicured gardens. But to Eleanor, it was simply home.

She sat in the sunroom, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping chamomile tea while looking out at the crashing waves. The door opened softly, and Matteo walked in, loosening his silk tie as he sank into the armchair across from her.

"Your father’s associates are trying to negotiate a plea deal," Matteo said, pouring himself a cup of black coffee. "They want to surrender three of their commercial properties in exchange for dropping the federal securities fraud charges."

Eleanor didn't look up from her teacup. "And what did you tell them?"

"I told them to pack their bags and leave the state by Friday," Matteo replied smoothly. "Bellhaven has no room for men who teach their children that cruelty is a form of power."

Eleanor finally raised her eyes, meeting his intense, unwavering gaze. A small, knowing smile touched her lips.

"You promised me you wouldn't destroy half the city," she reminded him, her tone laced with mock severity.

Matteo chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that warmed the sunroom. "I only destroyed what was rotten, my love. The rest of the city is standing safely behind us."

He reached across the table and took her hand, his thumb gently tracing the repaired lace at her wrist—the exact same lace from her modest wedding dress.

"Does this mean," Matteo asked softly, "you are finally ready to let the city know who you really are?"

Eleanor pulled her hand back just an inch, a playful spark dancing in her eyes.

"Not yet," she said. "I kind of like my apron. And besides, I hear the morning shift at Bellissimo Trattoria needs a new manager."
