Chapter 9 - The Anniversary at the ChapelSix months to the day after their secret wedding, Matteo told Eleanor to dress in something simple.

He didn't tell her where they were going, only driving her down the winding coastal highway as the morning fog began to lift from the surface of the Atlantic.
They arrived at the small, weathered stone chapel overlooking the ocean—the exact same chapel where they had exchanged vows beneath winter rain and stained-glass windows.
This time, there was no rain. The morning sun was breaking through the clouds, casting a golden, ethereal glow across the ancient wooden beams.
When they stepped inside, Eleanor gasped softly.
The pews were lined with hundreds of white roses, and standing near the altar was not a stranger, but Father Thomas, the elderly priest who had married them, smiling warmly.
Matteo took Eleanor’s hands in his, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep and fierce it took her breath away.
"Six months ago," Matteo said, his voice thick with emotion, "you asked me to love you without surrounding you with walls. You asked me to trust your courage, to let you walk through this city as an ordinary woman so you could see what people are truly like."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it to reveal a simple silver band inlaid with tiny, delicate engravings of ocean waves—a custom piece he had designed himself.
"You proved your courage to me every single day," Matteo continued, his voice trembling slightly. "You showed me that true power isn't about fear, control, or dominance. True power is the quiet grace to survive the worst of humanity and still choose love."
Tears welled in Eleanor’s eyes as she looked at the man who commanded empires, yet knelt before her with the devotion of a humble servant.
"Matteo..." she whispered, her voice breaking.
"Marry me again," he said softly, sliding the silver band onto her finger beside her modest wedding ring. "Not in secret. Not in the shadows. But before everyone who matters. Let me give you the world you deserve."
May you like
Eleanor smiled through her tears, leaning down to press her forehead against his.
"You already gave me the only thing I ever wanted," she whispered. "Your heart."
