Chapter 3 - THE MIDNIGHT STALKER

Forty-eight hours passed in the Velasco mansion like an eternity inside a gilded cage.

Sofía refused to leave Mateo’s side. She slept upright in the uncomfortable velvet armchair, a cold damp cloth pressed against the baby's forehead as his tiny body purged the last traces of the Hexachlorophene-9 poison. Valeria, humbled and shattered by the revelation of Leonor’s betrayal, sat quietly in the corner, watching Sofía with a mixture of reverence and deep shame.

Nicolás did not sleep at all.

He spent the two days in his subterranean command center beneath the mansion, routing international wire transfers, cutting ties with corrupt medical syndicates in Houston and Madrid who had lied about Mateo's condition, and deploying his private security forces to lock down the Bosques de las Lomas estate.

Yet, every few hours, he walked up the grand staircase, unlocked the nursery door, and stood silently in the doorway, watching Sofía care for his son.

By the third night, Mateo’s skin had cleared up entirely. The angry red rashes were gone, replaced by smooth, healthy infant skin. The baby cooed, grabbed Sofía’s finger with his tiny fist, and smiled—the first genuine smile his parents had ever witnessed.

Valeria burst into quiet tears, burying her face in her hands. "He's... he's actually healing. You performed a miracle."

"I didn't perform a miracle," Sofía said softly, rocking the baby against her shoulder. "I just stopped poisoning him. Medicine isn't magic, Ms. Serrano. Sometimes it's just about having the courage to look at what everyone else is ignoring because they're too blinded by luxury."

The door creaked open, and Nicolás stepped inside. The harsh fluorescent light from the hallway caught the sharp angles of his face. He looked exhausted, the stubble dark along his jawline, but his eyes were razor-sharp.

"The pediatric dermatologist has cleared him," Nicolás said, his voice low so as not to wake the child. "She says his system is clean. She wants to keep him under observation for a week, but the danger has passed."

He walked closer, stopping just inches from Sofía. The physical presence of the mafia boss was overwhelming—a mix of expensive cedarwood cologne, gunmetal, and raw, untamed power.

"You haven't eaten in three days," Nicolás noted, his gaze dropping to her pale face and the faded cotton uniform she had refused to change. "Don Esteban prepared a private meal in the dining hall."

"I don't eat with wolves, Mr. Velasco," Sofía replied evenly, not backing down an inch. "I finish my shift in four hours. Then I go back to my apartment in Doctores, back to my double shifts at the public hospital, and back to my real life."

Nicolás’s eyes narrowed. "You think you can just walk out of here like nothing happened? You just dismantled a decades-old family dynamic. You exposed my mother. You put a target on your back the moment you stepped through those gates."

"My life has always had a target on it," Sofía snapped back, her patience finally wearing thin. "I live in the real world where people work for a living, where bullets fly through public streets while you sit in your marble fortress drinking imported scotch. Your threats don't scare me."

Before Nicolás could answer, a piercing, high-pitched shriek echoed from the security monitors mounted in the hallway outside.

CRASH.

The sound of shattering glass shook the reinforced windowpanes of the nursery. Instantly, all the lights in the mansion flickered and died, plunging the opulent rooms into pitch blackness, save for the eerie green glow of the emergency backup lighting.

"Get down!" Nicolás roared.

In a fraction of a second, Nicolás lunged forward, sweeping Sofía and the baby off their feet and driving them both down behind the heavy mahogany oak of the crib base just as a volley of high-caliber rounds tore through the nursery windows.

RAT-A-TAT-TAT-TAT.

Bullet shrapnel rained down like lethal hail. The silk curtains shredded into ribbons.

"What is that?" Valeria screamed, cowering near the fireplace.

"An assassination team," Nicolás snarled, his hand already dipping beneath his suit jacket to draw a custom black Sig Sauer pistol. His face was no longer that of a worried father; it was the face of a ruthless cartel warlord going to war.

"They bypassed the perimeter sensors?" Sofía asked, holding Mateo tight against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs, yet her mind remarkably clear.

"Not bypassed," Nicolás said, his teeth bared in a grim smile. "Betrayed. Someone inside the estate turned off the outer grid."

He looked down at Sofía, his gray eyes burning through the darkness.

"They aren't just here for me," Nicolás whispered. "They know about you. They know you found the poison. They are here to erase everyone who knows the truth."
