Chapter 5 - THE PHANTOM SYNDICATE

The service elevator shaft was old, smelling of grease and iron cables, but it was their only way down to the underground garages where Nicolás kept his armored fleet.

Sofía slammed her hand against the descent button. The cage rattled to life, groaning as it dropped downward into the subterranean levels of the Bosques de las Lomas estate. Mateo whimpered softly against her chest, startled by the noise, but he didn't cry out—as if the infant sensed that absolute silence was the only thing keeping them alive.

Ding.

The gate slid open with a metallic screech.

They stepped out into the sprawling underground garage. Rows of matte-black armored SUVs, custom sports cars, and vintage collectibles gleamed under the harsh industrial lights. But the garage was not empty.

Two men in tactical gear were standing near the exit ramp, setting a heavy remote-detonated C4 explosive charge against the reinforced steel blast doors.

"They're rigging the exit!" Sofía whispered, freezing behind a concrete pillar.

Nicolás’s expression was cold as marble. He didn't hesitate. He raised his sidearm, but before he could pull the trigger, a red laser dot flickered across his chest.

"Drop the gun, Nicolás!"

A voice echoed from the upper catwalk of the garage.

Stepping out from the shadows of the mezzanine was a tall, silver-haired man wearing an immaculate Italian suit that looked entirely out of place in a warzone. He held a sleek Beretta pistol pointed directly down at Nicolás’s head.

"Victor," Nicolás said, his voice flat.

Victor Santoro—head of the rival Cartel de la Sierra and Nicolás’s primary business rival for the past decade.

"It's over, my boy," Victor smiled, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. "Your mother reached out to us three weeks ago. She realized you were going soft, trying to legitimize the Velasco shipping empire into boring, law-abiding logistics. She wanted a strong leader back at the helm. And all we had to do in exchange was eliminate a few loose ends—starting with that expensive baby of yours, and ending with you."

"You used an old woman's vanity to breach my home," Nicolás said, taking a slow step forward, positioning his body so he shielded Sofía and the baby entirely from Victor’s line of sight.

"Business is business, Nicolás," Victor chuckled, cocking his pistol. "And tonight, the Velasco dynasty dies in a fiery accident. Blow the doors!" he shouted to the men by the exit.

One of the operatives slammed his hand down on the detonator remote.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

The countdown timer on the C4 charge started flashing a blinding red light: 0:10... 0:09... 0:08...

"Nicolás!" Sofía screamed, realizing what was about to happen. The blast would collapse the entire garage, burying them alive beneath tons of concrete and steel.

In that fraction of a second, Nicolás did something insane.

Instead of diving for cover, he dropped his MP5, lunged forward with blinding speed, and threw his heavy tactical knife—the one strapped to his boot—straight across the garage.

THWIP.

The blade buried itself hilt-deep into Victor Santoro’s shoulder. Victor shrieked, his pistol flying from his hand as he tumbled backward over the metal railing of the mezzanine, crashing hard onto the concrete floor below.

At the exact same time, Sofía didn't panic. Her emergency room training kicked in—the instinct to act when everyone else froze. She spotted an open industrial fire extinguisher mounted on the wall just feet away from the C4 charge.

She sprinted past the startled mercenaries, grabbed the heavy red canister, pulled the pin, and blasted a massive cloud of sub-zero liquid CO2 directly into the faces of the two bomb-makers, blinding and freezing them instantly.

Before they could recover, Nicolás was there. Two swift, brutal strikes with the butt of his pistol neutralized the remaining operatives.

0:02... 0:01...

Nicolás lunged across the floor, grabbed the flashing C4 charge with his bare hands, and hurled it with all his might through the shattered window of an empty armored transport vehicle just as it went off.

BOOM!

The shockwave blew out the remaining glass and rattled the concrete pillars, but the primary blast was contained within the vehicle. Thick black smoke filled the garage, masking their position completely.

Nicolás staggered back, coughing, his clothes dusted in grey ash. He turned around, his eyes frantically searching through the smoke.

"Sofía! Mateo!" he yelled over the ringing in his ears.

"We're here!" her voice called out from behind one of the matte-black SUVs.

Nicolás rushed over. Sofía was kneeling on the floor, holding Mateo, who was blinking wide-eyed at the smoke, completely unharmed.

Nicolás dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around both of them in a desperate, fiercely protective embrace that shattered every rigid boundary he had ever built around his heart.
